How much of a filed edge will likely be masked in an ANACS holder?

I was just thinking about a coin that's been at a local show--a flowing hair half in an ANACS holder, netted because of filed edge. There's a small part of the obverse where the filing can be seen... but, could this mean the entire edge (and all the lettering) is filed away, too, but simply can't be seen because of the holder? Or is it likely that just the tiny part I see on the obverse, extending down the edge, is filed?

Thanks,

Jeremy

  • There is no way to know except if you crack the slab. We could all guess but no one really knows except the prior submitter and the graders.

Is this something that might be reflected in the net grade? I don't remember the details, but I think the net grade was G-4. So, would it be fair to say that if there were VG details, the filing would be less than if there were F details?

  • Filing is filing. It would get bodbagged at NGC or PCGS. Maybe a net VG would be less filing then a net G but why second guess it? I say crack the slab and take a chance or pass. I'd pass.

  • If it got a net grade at ANACS and stayed in that holder you think it would not get bodybagged @ PCGS? Come on.
