1863 IHC - bb'd for tooling/damage....possible die cracks?

I just thought I'd throw this question out, and hope that some people might offer an opinion.image I got this back from PCGS bb'd as noted, but I called them and asked if they could take another look at it, because when I looked under magnification, the lines are not incuse, but rather protrude from the coin's surface. They offered to review it at no charge other than shipping..I'm wondering if I should take up their time and my $$ by sending it back - it's not really that valuable a coin, but I thought it might be a neat die variety. image
Whatdya think?
I might need Jeremy's help on this image - when I pull it up at photobucket it's very large & detailed, but when I post it here, it is resized - tuff to see what I'm talking about!image

You picture is too small to tell anything about the coin.

    Sorry.... image

Without being able to examine the coin, the one thing I can tell you is that some scratches can look like die cracks on a superficial level. The scratches create a furrow of metal on both sides that can resemble a die break under little or no magnification. BUT if you use a 10X glass you will see that it is a scratch quite easily.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't those lines raised? If so, they were on the die and thus would not be BB'd. Very odd.

Die breaks usually don't form in that pattern. Die cracks usually run to at least one edge of the coin, and these are all in the middle. If they did not do that, there would be no spreading of the dies and visible crack.

They look like crude initials to me, perhaps "DA." If the picture were a little clearer or if you looked at this coin with a 10X, I image that you would find that they are scratches.

  • Glenn - thanks for the help on the pic. It is odd looking - under mag, the lines do look to be protruding, except for the small gouge above the 'E', but I agree that I've never seen die cracks in such a pattern! I guess I'll save the expense of resubmitting it...it just seemed like a very curious piece to me, and I wondered how closely PCGS looked at it. Sounds like they most likely got it right. I appreciate the insights!image

  • Not die cracks. Scratches as others have stated.
golddustin...........You got way too much money if you're sending this sorta stuff in for slabbing.

  • It was a freebie w/renewal of membership, and I thought it looked odd - just satisfying my curiosity. But I agree that I should stick to series that I know more about - I didn't check the value until after I submitted it..image
But hey, some folks spend $$ drinkin', some gamblin', some on vacations to warm places when it's snowing outside....I send in goofy coins now & then!image
