eBay 1882 $3 gold fake

"That 1882 $3 gold coin is a counterfeit."

He replied:
"is this a question? heres agreat idea if you think its a counterfit, dont bid you MORON!!!!"

You may be right. Personally I'd not bid on raw gold like this. But -- Can you share with us how you know it's fake? The education would be useful.

And while I don't wish a $1,755 fake on anyone, his response to you would alleviate my bad feeling about it by at least a little...

[Edited to add: Looking at the seller's description, it looks like that of a bogus seller to me (and possibly a hijacked eBay ID), but I wonder if there's some diagnostic on the coin you see.]
  • I'm not so sure that it was a counterfeit, he has a very large inventory of certified coins also. Although the coin appeared to be in excellent condition.

From the image, rounded soft lettering and the telltale soft roundness UNDER the curl of the headdress feathers. It looks phony to me. I would not bid.
    Reverse wheat kernels also.
And that "swooshy" look to the fields. In hand, it could look different, but those characteristics ...usually...are bad.

He has this one up for sale now and it has the same images as the other one. Perhaps the high bidder backed out of the transaction? The same seller also has some $2.50 pieces that look fake to me - I am awaiting confirmation from a fellow forum member.

How can you tell it's fake?

3cents - One of the telltale signs is that I am willing to bet you five grand that if you send the coin to PCGS, they will call it a fake. Feeling lucky??? image

  • Coinguy,
You're right, same coin, different auction. I guess it doesnt matter whether it's counterfeit or not - being as though that's not the coin that your getting anyway.

And now I see that he has another one that is a fake:

  • How does he know you're a Mormon? Have you dealt with him before?

    So many questions...

    No, never.

From the tone and subject matter of his reply I'm guessing that he knows the coin isn't real.
If he sells certified coins, then he'd know enough to get that coin certified so he could get top dollar for it.
Actually, he probably tried to get it slabbed already. That's why he would let his "$40000+" coin go for
    less than $2000.

Amazing that people get away with this crap. Where are the net police when they're needed?

It's raw $3 gold on Ebay.
  • Is the minted in Tennessee a tip off? What happened to the Ebay "copy" and "reproduction" requirements? They just don't get it do they.

Good thing it was won by a brand new bidder (who signed up a day after the auction went up). I doubt anyone will be hurt by this auction.
