Who's the BIGGEST, RICHEST, most FAMOUS...current..coin collector?

We know about Lilly, Menjou, Burghoff and those guys. But I haven't heard of any really famous CURRENT collectors of coins.
With the security they have, it would certainly add no real risk for that knowledge to be public.
Anyone know of any famous current collectors?

Also like to know if they are old or young (40 as dividing line)

I was thinking I heard recently that a basketball star was a coin collector (Karl Malone?)

There is a "prominent Eastern collector" who is reputed to have the finest Modern gold collection ever assembled. He is referred to in David Akers' book Handbook to 20th Century Gold many times. I am not one to guess if he is the biggest...and he certainly is NOT famous by choice.. , but he does have MONSTER coins.

I don't know the name but the dealer Kevin Lipton represents a newbee who according to 12/20/04 CW is representing a client with a 10 million dollar coin fund " He owns a lot of classic rarities" per Lipton and just got the '84 and '85 Proof Trade Dollars from the DLRC Auction. Ten Mill is a lot to "invest" with just one adviser in anything, so I'd guess (s)he's got a much larger portfolio.

Jack Lee (I'm not him, but we share the name). He sold his proof Morgans in the 1980's for 7 million to Legend. And he's building the "Jack Lee 2" set now...

Last time we spoke he told me to quit smoking. The nerve...

I know that some time ago there was an auction of very nice type material that belonged to Andre Dawson. Perhaps he is still collecting.

Dwight Manley would have to count, but he's already pretty well-known in coin circles and in sports.

I thought the Jack Lee DMPL/PL set was bought for "just over 1 million" to Legend. I assume no proof Morgan Set is worth that much. Also I'm suprised that a number of Morgans come on the market with a Jack Lee Set II provinance advertised. Either he sold the second set, or he must have a whopper second set (the duplicates sure are nice).

As for Karl Malone, I *think* I heard something about him being a collector. Former baseball star Andre Dawson was/is a collector, too, as I recall reading something about some of his collection being up for auction a couple years ago.

I'd also imagine that many of the candidates for "richest" would prefer to remain anonymous...at least for now.

There is an Eastern collector building a mind-boggling set of colonials. He doesn't like to advertise his name, so I wouldn't mention it here. There is also a gentleman trying to build a more-or-less complete set of U.S. gold...

There will always be great collectors. Unfortunately, I suspect that the days of insurance agents with world class collections are over.

Sports figures such as Malone (and Rodman if I recall) are "collectors"...how interested are they in their collections is the question to ask, though. Malone's agent (Manley) is a coin nut, so any of the sports figures he represents could just be diversifying their portfolios under his guidance or suggestion. I recall a picture of Malone when he had just won a coin in auction and Manley was in the photo too...I think it was at the Superior 2001 ANA sale in Salt Lake City. Did he by any chance buy the 1913 Liberty Nickel?

I'd say the guy behind the Knoxville collection. I wish I knew who it was because I'd just call him and ask to come over and see the coins. I have several ideas as to who it is but I'm not sure.

Finally remembered where I heard that Rodman collected coins. Playboy ran an article in April about the 1933 Saint and in it says Rodman was outbid for a 1885 silver trade dollar ($907,500) by Jay Parrino. I knew keeping all those Playboys around would come in handy one day

I am glad no one suspects it is me. Even though I am an "Eastern collector," I am certainly not THE Eastern Collector.

Paying for kids tuition at College certainly takes me or for that matter, almost anyone out of the running! I am too content in being a time traveller and visiting all of the great subsets that all I ever do is obtain nice samples from each series.

I just hope that when it is time for me to go that I will be remembered as an "engaged collector who enjoyed it all."

Biggest, richest, most famous do not mean the most engaged coin collector.
