You do if you work for a non profit like me. image I call it the "in lieu of regular salary" bonus. Pretty nice one, too.

I've never gotten a Christmas bonus in my life. The companies I worked for in corporate America never paid them. The most you could hope for was lunch at a nice restautant.

Back in the 1980's New England Telephone contributed 85 cents per employee for a holiday lunch. (Bah Humbug!) Needless to say if there was a holiday lunch, the empolyees had to kick in to pay for it.

This year is the first time I will have received a year-end bonus. I never received one the past 20 years at my other jobs. So I am planning on what to use it for. I joked at my local coin club meeting 2 nights ago that I should buy some coins, and not tell me wife. She doesn't know I am getting a bonus.

I do know I need to coins to complete 2 sets - 1909-S VDB Lincoln and the 1916-D Merc. Hard decisions....

I can buy a roll of quarters, roll of nickels and 2 rolls of pennys from the banks

Pay down on my Heritage Rare coin galleries Visa card!
  • If I get one I'll just add the check to the pile and get around to cashing it in six months or so. I have no idea what I'll be doing when that point comes. Now my first August 2004 paycheck will go to paying off a 1793 chain cent.

1 - I will be getting no Christmas bonus
2 - If I did, I wish my company would simply give me some nice 18th or 19th century coins rather than cash. Just save me the time of going to the bank.

Don't get me wrong, my company treats me very well. I have been there over 16 years and plan on staying there until I retire (if all works out well). Christmas bonuses are just not a company policy.

  • Thanks Dan and coinLT (can't spell lieutenant) for your service. I also give em out to my employees, but no soup for me. Did get them as a young-un, usually at the company Christmas party, had to walk five miles through a blizzard to get there, uphill both ways.

I'm not going to give me one this year, and may even fire my lazy butt on the 22nd. Good help is hard to find.
  • A xmas bonus..hmmmm, Considering the company I (worked) for sold our division off to another major company, and the deal is/was either sign with the new or see ya at the unemployment line. Took the deal which did not include such things as bonus for saving the corporation 27 million in workers comp claims, and overall insurance claims over a 5 year period, no the best thing was take the 4% boost to a meager salary, work 72 hours a week, listen to a wife bicth at less time at home and no extra $$ to show for it. Then make a half arsed attempt at putting together a full set of CC's in a 64/65- only to find out that your dog needs 4k in chemo treatment to get rid of the lymphoma cancer or she will die.... A bonus? Waking up each and saying thanks to the BIG GUY upstairs for another semi PEACEful day I have had. THAT'S my bonus.

Would have been nice to have seen some extra $$ this year.....

Bonus arrives in March after our company's end of year financials are calculated. Generally it is good news.

I've been employed by about a dozen companies over the last 24 years. At my current job, the company that I work for is the first that gives out a Christmas bonus. The owners are really great people and I can't say enough good things about them. I truly know how lucky I am.

  • Wow, I didn't realize how many companies DONT give bonus.

I guess that's great since I'll be handing them out to my employees Saturday at my holiday party which is being held at Arnie Mortons.

Great help is much easier to find -- when you have a reputation of being a generous and thoughtful company.

    hey Shamika

you are hereby forgiven for the transgression of assuming that corporate America has a clue..................about anything except their own greed and eventual ruination. BTW, we had this discussion at work yesterday and it's still fresh in my mind. there are two things which have become commonplace, especially with larger companies, those being the elimination of incentives(particularly the Christmas bonus) and mandatory contributions to health coverage(generally in the form of a weekly deduction).

my employer has a plan whereby the parent company gives management money to be used at their discretion. the trouble is that it never makes it past the production manager. what we received at Thanksgiving and again at Christmas was a Gift Card for $50 along with a blanket letter of appreciation; both only serve to annoy the employees who aren't stupid and know the greed in the front office. what's lost on management is that even some small token amount would serve to foster goodwill and awork force with a better attitude. all this from a multi-million dollar company is embarrassing.

don't get me wrong, i'll give them a good honest day's work and i'm grateful for the gift cards. the thing is this----i've been working since the early 1970's and the picture gets more dismal each year. management teams and stockholders reap the reward of the workers while corporations ship entire industries overseas. it's all quite pathetic.

    hey, i feel better now!!

  • My company actually paid us a $500 bonus this year, tax free. It was more of a "thank you" to its empmloyees for the great year we had financially than it was a holiday bonus.

Funny thing is, many of my coworkers are still not happy because we were told we would not receive our usual performance-based 401K contribution early next year. I tell them that the company didn't really have to do either and we should be at least somewhat grateful, and that most bonuses nowadays usually consists of a $50 gift certificate to a local grocery store.

Regarding numismatic plans, this just means a little more money for the Long Beach show and a few more bids on e-bay.

Well, remember what I said earlier in the thread about not getting a bonus? Just got one today.

    But not from my employer.

From my Indian tribe. They just paid out $250 (minus withholding) to all tribal members aged 22 to 59 from their casino's operating account. (I'm guessing the elders aged 60+ get more and those under 22 have theirs held in trust.)

But if that's my "Christmas bonus" for the year, I guess I've already spent it (plus a bit more) on the 1854-O half I bought earlier this month (and received in the mail today) . With this money applied, after tax, it only "cost" me $150:

The bonus from my company (a small startup) was a brunch cruise in San Diego Bay. Nice, but can't spend it on a coin.

I did "bonus" myself with a couple of very nice commemorative coins that I will be showing off when they arrive in a few days.
