Do ebay sellers hurt themselves by setting rigid terms?

Well, I would like to thank everyone else for not bidding. I got the coin for $900 plus $10.20 in insurance. I had to go to the post office today anyway to mail out some coins, and the seller lives about two hours from me.

And again, you do not need cash to purchase MOs. I will use my debit card just like I do every time I get a MO.

<< <i>There are others who feel the same as I do about money orders. 'Nuff said. >>

I'm with you on the MOs. They're a royal PITA, especially now around Christmas time.

Money Order: Drive to bank, wait in line, withdraw cash, drive to post office, wait in line, pay 90c+37c for the privilege, drive home. Total time: at least an hour. And then I gotta wait two weeks or so for the coin to show up.

PayPal: Click-click-click done. Seller mails coin same day or next. Coin shows up in less than a week.

If it's a must-have, gotta-get coin, I'll jump through whatever hoop the seller puts up. But if it's just a routine purchase, and the seller doesn't take PayPal or makes other unreasonable demands, I'll just go elsewhere, thank you.

<< <i>Geez.. all this complaining about the money orders. Don't y'all know that you can buy money orders from other places BESIDES the post office? >>

In the case of this particular auction, the seller will only ship right away with a postal money order. All others would hold up shipping for bank clearance.

<< <i>Money Order: Drive to bank, wait in line, withdraw cash >>

Unless you live in an area where your post office does not accept plastic, that is simply not true. All post offices that have a terminal accept debit cards and treat them the same as cash for purchasing money orders.

Personally, I don't mind grabbing a USPS money order if that's what the seller wants. But, the post office is about two blocks from my shop and I'm there most mornings anyway. I might feel differently if it was a substantial inconvenience.

Most retailers know to set terms conducive to a quick decision. You want everything to slant toward an impulse buy.

No way I would ever go to the PO for a money order to buy a coin. I'd rather pass. So the answer to the original question is yes.

As to why many of the responses were so argumentative, I just don't know. The question and assertion seems right on.

What is really bothering you today? I wont even charge you to listen. BTW it is...

MOC, you get what you pay for, and listening to you is not worth much anyway.

What's bothering you is that I have blocked your PMs, so that you cannot attack me privately. Now you feel compelled to do it on the boards. All because you do not like my friends. Pretty lame for a supposed professional.

Back on-topic, I have two mirror image generic date Morgans that are the same date, both slabbed NGC MS-63, both with peripheral brownish toning. In the next few weeks, I will do an ebay experiment in which I will list each coin for auction individually. The terms will be exactly the same but for one I will allow paypal, check, money order and the other I will only accept the money orders. While a small experiment like this is far from conclusive, it will be interesting to see the results. I will report back in a month or so.

Good point. If I said that I preferred mint chocolate chip ice cream to French vanilla, should or would the tone of the responses be any different?

What if I said if I cannot have mint chocolate chip ice cream, I do not want any ice cream at all? Is that a personal preference someone should find cause to argue. Of course, they could say, "Well, you really do not like ice cream that much." or "Great. More ice cream for me." That's all fine, but "Oh, well, you are not a worthy ice cream-eater anyway and are too lazy and not committed enough to ice cream to eat it and horror of horrors, you might not get any dessert ever again, then" is a little absurd in my opinion.

I can already tell you what the results will be. The coin with MOs only will bring less. That's why as a buyer, you're more likely to come away with good buys if you don't mind minor inconveniences. When you posted this auction last night, it was perfect for me. The seller lives only a couple of hours away, and I had to go to the PO anyway to mail some coins. And I have been looking for a common 64 Saint.

Well, for your sake I hope the reverse hasn't turned in the holder or hiding something unpleasant. No returns, and no picture of the reverse and all...

Well, I have to make another admission. I know who this seller is, and let's just say he doesn't consider complete and good images a necessity to sell PCGS coins. As far as it turning in the holder, highly unlikey for a gold coin. I'll post images as soon as I receive it.

If it's a generic thing i want, I shop for easy terms, and that usually means paypal and reasonable shipping.

For Rare items that I will pay *whateverittakes* and am a little more flexible on terms, including getting a MO.

Here are the facts of this thread in order:

    1. Robert doesnt like to use money orders. They are a pain in the a$$ for him.

    2. MOC doesnt mind Money orders. They are not a pain in the a$$ for him.

    3. MOC and cratylus are obviously annoyed that Robert thinks money orders are a pain in the a$$.

    4. Robert is one of three radiologists (sic) on the board.

    5. Robert makes more money that me.

    6. If Robert wants to buy something of mine, I send it to him on approval.

    7. George Bush is president of the United States.

    8. I have never done business with MOC.

    9. I sometimes struggle with athelete's foot but find that Tinactin works well (see pic #1)

    10. I had great sex with my beautiful wife this morning. It was enjoyable to me and seemed to be enjoyable for her. (see pic #2)

    11. I have what I think is the finest known circulated 1818 half dollar in existance. (see pic #3 middle coin)

Cant we just leave it at that?

I don't know about your wife, but if I posted something like that here about Sally, I'd be dead meat. image

No doubt about it. I would be dead meat too.

The thing is that I know the chances or her logging onto the boards and seeing my post is about as likely as me winning the lottery. image

For me, it's three speed bumps, six stop signs, five traffic lights, and three freeway exits to the post office. I don't have a debit card, so if I don't have the cash on hand, the bank trip is necessary as well. It can easily take me over an hour to send a money order. I can run through a PayPal transaction in under a minute.

    MOC,

I dont know what bird of paradise flew up your nose, but why dont you quit while you only look like a small donkey instead of a large one.
Robert didnt do anything to you until you smarted off.

This is the problem with so many threads on this forum. He asked if anyone thought ebay sellers hurt themselves by setting rigid terms.
You took the post as a whine session.

It wasnt. Period. Answer the question that the thread is asking or STFU...

Whatever PM war you had with him should be kept private instead of posting it on the board.

    MOC,

That was a completely different style of thread that was designed to attack a member of the armed services.

I am not saying that you shouldnt speak your mind. I am simply saying that if a thread is started about a specific topic, you shouldnt attack the poster.

    That is all.

Well, at least this board is a good way to find people to put on your mental blocked sellers list.
  • coinlieutenantcoinlieutenant Posts: 9,310 ✭✭✭✭✭
    *sigh*

I was not trying to be preachy, just trying to stay on topic.

If I came off as arrogant, I apologize. I just dont see why so many of these threads that ask a legitimate question so very often lead to comments that answer the question by attacking the poster.

Oh, is MOC not winning potential customers with his behavior here? Name calling is no way to win friends and influence people. I have a copy of Andrew Carnegie's landmark book if you (or anyone else) would like to borrow it.

Dr. N. Shall I send it to your home or office?
