Muchos Gracias, Pedro, Muchos Gracias!!!!

I just came home from a rather hard day at the office, and the news made me ecstatic.

The great thing about this in order of importance to me:

(1) He’s not going to the Yankees and they don’t have to put up with his crap in the Yankee clubhouse *
(2) He is going to the Mess, burial ground for burnt out former stars
(3) He is not a Red Sox player anymore
(4) He doesn’t have to shave and can keep his dreadlocks

I will be able to sleep very well tonight.

That is such a stupid move on Pedro's part...just goes to show that he doesn't care about playing for a winner...all he wants is THE MONEYimage

But then again...I've never been a fan of his, so he can have the Metsimage

I agree. No loyalty whatsoever anymore. You would think he would want a chance to repeat winning the WS, even if for less money.

The Red Sox ownership is the party to be accused of a lack of loyalty... they tried to get Arod, blundered and spent the summer making Nomar the goat for his lack of enthusiasm for their "vote of confidence" in him... the players see this kind of thing happen and now they have to do what it takes to maintain the upper heand, save face, and do the bidding of the union... to date, this is the biggest signing of the off-season... don't you think Don Fehr is losing his mind over the deflated martket for his constituency?

I am a Pedro fan, I am disappointed to see him go, but the Sox would have been foolish to guarantee $56M to a near rag-arm.

Let the players union rejoice. I will root for laundry.

    Gemmy,

I guess you and I as Yankee fans did not want this mop head. I don't care how good he is, I do not care to see him in a Yankees uniform. Glad it will not happen. However, I still think it was classless of Pedro to jump ship--absolutely no team loyalty. The Sox did offer him a fair contract, so it was not like the Nomar case.

I echo this sentiment. But, in Theo I trust. According to Curt Schilling, "Theo has a plan. Trust him". No doubt the Sox have a backup plan in place, whether it be Clement, Hudson, or whomever. I am sad today, but it was a smart move not to cave in to him. What in the world is he thinking here - going to the Mets? A team that's out of contention by July 4th every year? For a few lousy dollars? He basically could have walked on water for the rest of his life in Boston, now who knows where his career will wind up with this decision.

    Anyway, thanks Petey. Good luck.

Hey we were in the series back in 2000. You make it seem like it's been 30 years lol
  • Kobecollector, are you a Mets and Lakers fan? I don't get it. LOL

"For A Few Dollars More" 1968 - Clint....I think Pedro may have been in the cast, but then again, he's not old enough. Oh, wait, that was a spaghetti western. Good luck in NY Pedro. I can't wait to see the NY tabloids when the season starts.

  • A lot of the Partiots in the last 2 years have avoided the open market, took less money in order to help
the team. Thanks Pedro for the memories, have fun in Met land counting your extra $$$$. image

  • << Kobecollector, are you a Mets and Lakers fan? I don't get it. LOL >>

Yes i am . My entire family including my late grandparents were Mets fans so i followed their lead. Of course when i began watching them they were completely horrible ( mid to late 70's ) and still love them to this day

My rooting for the Lakers goes back to 79 when my sister and i together watched Magic and Michigan State beat the undefeated Indiana State Sycamores and M.R Larry Bird. I guess because i was so young ( 9 at the time ) Magic made a huge impression on me and i just continued to follow his career thus becoming a Laker fan.

I started watching sports very early ( went to my first Mets game when i was 6 ) and was never told " root for the local team " and nobody ever told me who or what team to root for ( like i will probably do to my son lol ) . So im grateful i was able to choose my teams for whatever reason

Whoa! Look who's back! Back again! Murcerfan's back! Tell a friend!

The timing is typical of you - at least Gemmy's been here supporting his team for the last few months.

  • Hey,

Admit it, it's fun having murcerfan back now.

Can't wait for his intelligent posts next year
when his Yankees storm through the AL East
with that feared pitching staff they have. image

I do not have a problem with Pedro leaving, He did his job and what the Sox asked him to do.......WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!!! NICE!!!

I dont blame him at all, why not go with the $$$$ at this point? He served us Sox fans well. I wish him the best.

Yes, you are right - the awesome Brown, Vasquez, Pavano, Wright (?) - should have the AL East trembling in its boots.

    Spammy you are so predictable.

If he had gone to the yankees, you would have been jumping up and down saying 'we're gonna win the world series for sure now!!!!'

But he spurns the spanks for the mets, gets a phat contract to end his career, and people call out his loyalty?

Why is it when people go for the money, people question their 'loyalty' but owners who spurn players for whatever reason get a pass?

Pedro wanted 4 years, the mets offered it to him, the Red Sox didn't...he's playing for the Mets. Why does he have to get hassled for it?
  • Axtell Rose, I have stated many times I wanted no part of Pedro. Just wait until he starts missing practices or calls in sick...the NY Press will be down on him fast.
  • ctsoxfanctsoxfan Posts: 6,246 ✭✭
I agree with you, Gemmy - and most Yankee fans I know didn't want him either. Of course, had you got him, I am sure you would be singing a different tune image. Still, the NY media will have a field day with Pedro and his quirks over the next few years - mark my words.

  • The Braves picked up Tim Hudson today. At this point in their careers that was a much better pick up than the Mets picking up Pedro Martinez. Hudson is 92 -38 in his career or something close to that. Pedro is on the down side of his career just like Glavine when the Mets picked him up.

The Braves picking up Hudson was HUGE, to say the least. I wanted the Sox to get him, but they were never in the running for him - and he wanted to go back "home" anyway. Imagine how great he'll be this year working with Mazzone? Outstanding trade by Atlanta.

    Axtell,

Gemmy and I never wanted any part of pedro and we are glad he is not a Yankee. I rather have that young pitcher Halsey move up in the rotation.

No word yet on the Giambi deal or the Tino Martinez one. Brown is staying put.

"Schilling is 38, I'm only 33," he said. "The fact that I had an off-year doesn't mean that I can be below Schilling. Still, with an off-year, I'm way over Schilling as a pitcher and I've pitched pretty much like Schilling the last few years, if you're going to talk about durability." - Pedro Martinez

Was this really necessary to say? The guy goes out on a bloody stump to win for your team and you try to say your worth more. Even if you think it some things are better left unsaid.
  • DeutscherGeistDeutscherGeist Posts: 2,990 ✭✭✭✭
That was a stupid thing for Pedro to say, but I think the media took him out of context and put a spin on it. I am not fond of Pedro, but I can't use this quote against him. I am always leary about how the media spins things. Let us face it, Pedro is not a smooth talking politician, so he can be an easy target for this sort of thing. This sort of thing happens a lot in baseball.

It could be Pedro was just justifying a 4 year contract and that he was pointing out that he pitched as many starts as Schilling. I have not checked the stats on that, but I think Schilling did miss a few starts in the last 4 years.
