    Baseball - Jack Buck
    Basketball - Dicky V.
    Football - John Madden
Hockey - Al Micheals (for at least one famous call)
  • Dick Vitale ? ?

That guy is all about self promotion

2 minutes left with the score tied , crowds going ballistic and all he's talking about is his " diaper dandy " and the rest of his ridiculous teams.

It's not all about your " gotta get a T.O Baby " and about his " Rolls Royce " teams , it's about THE GAME being played
  • Harry Kalas i think is his name?
    Clement/Melrose/Pang
    Keith Jackson
any basketball announcer who tells me the game is over and Sportscenter is next

I couldn't think of any other basketball announcer besides the Alberts. Dicky V is a love/hate relationship, he gets on my nerves but I always find myself quoting him when watching a game. Get a TO BABY!

I know I picked Vin Scully as my favorite baseball announcer, and I maintain that feeling, but I absolutely HAVE TO give Honorable Mention to
    Mel Allenimage

Every weekend when I was growing up in the 1970's, I absolutely HAD TO be at home when This Week in Baseball came on because I loved hearing Mel's voice and the way he described the actionimage

Also, Harry Kalas has got to have the second best voice ever, after the late, great "Voice of God", John Facendaimage

    Vin Scully, hands down.
Although he was never one of my favorites, Chick Hearn coined a lot of terms that are common now, and was a pretty good announcer.
Mel Allen was great, and I always like Al Michaels for any sport he was doing.
    Least favorite?
Jim Gray, hands down. A complete waste of human flesh.

    Jon Miller is a master.

Ditto CON. Many others are mentioned. Tough to call one. Miller is a pleasure to listen to, knows when to shut it, and plays off his color guy as well as anyone ever has. IMO. Regards.

Mr3 - wow, that is thorough. I like your Cosell inclusions - he was a love/hate kind of guy - I loved him. McEnroe is also top notch. I was sorry to see his late-night show cancelled on MSNBC. Garagiola has gone into retirement, but he was a gem behind the mike. Thanks for your list.

  • Mr3holesinone,

Yes, McEnroe is a great tennis voice.
I even loved his playing style, but not his mouth.

Are you old enough to remember Soccer Made in Germany on PBS ?

There was an announcer in the late 70's/early 80's named Toby Charles.
I have about 20 games on tape. I just love listening to him announce a game.

IT'S IN THE BACK OF THE NET !!!!

Henry Longhurst doesn't even get a honorable mention for Golf?

  • Coinkat, while I have been an avid golfer for over twenty years I cannot say that I remember Henry Longhurst as an announcer. I know he was a gifted golf writer but I didn't know he was an announcer. I think he was before my time, thanks for the info.

ZSZ70: I vaguely remember PBS soccer...kinda like my golf knowledge from way back then, lol. Now I really like watching World Cup/National team soccer, women's soccer and college games.

Regarding McEnroe, his antics weren't something I admire but his playing was top notch. I didn't think his show on CNBC? was that bad either the coupla times I saw it.
