    Replicated or counterfeited?

    Replicated, Bust dollars.

Counterfeited? Something gold, either incuse indian or early gold.

  • I'd say trade dollars with Type II gold dollars a close second and three dollar gold running third.

Trade dollars for one. The amount of junk that comes from the Shanghai dealers on e-bay makes me wonder what hasn't been counterfeited so far. They even create coins with dates that are non existantfor the series or that have laughable mulings. I guess you can call these fantasy pieces rather than counterfeits but people are still dumb enough to buy them.

From what I have read over the years.

The number one most counterfeited coin is the 1909-S VDB, the number two coin is the 1916-D Mercury Dime.

  • Trade $

I've seen also seated and bust. Funny thing is I've also seen coins for years coins weren't made (not too good of a counterfeit)

I'm thinking it has changed the last few years to the Trade $.
The way it's going there will soon be more fakes than real ones.

$1 gold by a long shot- I think the copy's made for jewelery far surpass the mintage of real ones. Lots of new trade dollar fakes showing in the last three years but I don't think it's close to the $1 gold. mike

    Replicated coins = Trade dollars
Altered coins = Expensive US key date coins; 1909-S VDB, 1914-D cents, 1916-D Dime, 1901-S Barber quarter.

1909-S VDB's are probably altered more than any other U.S. coin, but I have to agree that the most often counterfeited U.S. coin is most likely the Trade Dollar. I just naturally assume when I spot a raw one that it is a counterfiet.
