The coin looks very clean. It's slightly mushy, like most of the 71-P's. I'm not sure what to make of the luster break on the reverse from the eagle toward to rim at 9:00, but I'd guess is is just a luster disturbance and not a mark. If the planchet is not full of microticks, and the luster is good, I'd say it's got a strong shot at 66. JMO

    Looks like a gem....at least a MS65.

    hey Marty

just a thought, you need to slow down on finding coins and work a little on imaging coins. this has the appearance of a silver "S" mint Ike so my initial impression is that the image isn't an accurate representatiopn of the coin. of all the 1971 Ike's i've seen, none have had a frosty finish like this, but perhaps i just haven't looked at enough coins. with all that said, the coin as pictured is a certain MS66.

When I first looked at the image I was thinking it was silver.
It has to be a 65 or 66image

Toughest Ike in GEM and yours looks like it.
(Unless, of course, it's the rare 1971 "Missing S" variety!

It has an odd look to it which might be attributable to planchet or die condition. It
certainly looks gem and could go a little better. A looks like a great strike from a die
which had enough wear that they normally wouldn't be producing any more gems.

    Pictures can be deceiving.

I think it would get a body bag. Looks cleaned.

    LindeDad,

It's not cleaned, the lighting is just strong. Ikes are extremely difficult coins for which to capture luster. Natural light, or diffuse light tends to make them look quite dark and lifeless. One of the most interesting "tells" on that coin is the ghost of Ike's bust in the center of the reverse. Because Ike's head takes an enormous amount of metal to fill, the strike pressure is different for the corresponding area of the reverse. Had the coin been polished, the reverse would be largely uniform, and devoid of that signature. It may have been dipped, but not cleaned. I suspect it wasn't dipped, as dipped Ike's usually take on a terribly sterile "hard" look. JMO
