When the coin you get is better than the picture . . .

. . . it's a happy day for all. I suspected the coin might be better than the deliberately washed-out picture indicated.

Here's the seller's pic:

Here's what the coin actually looks like:

It's a beautiful, original quarter, and a B-2 to boot. Rarity 4!

  • That is how I got my new Proof Barber 10c. From DLRC - coins are usually better than the scans they still use (better for volume they say). I found a dark Proof Benson - bad brown photo - looked up the original auction catalog where the coin was properly photographed - and then bought that 10c as fast as I could. It is a knockout! I will add the two pics in a little bit - shocking difference. And I am HAPPY!

Yeah, let's see everyone's scores... did you see a crappy picture and use your expertise in a particular series to jump on it? Let's see some more before-and-afters.

As far as what the coin's worth, that would depend whether there's two variety collectors who both want it. he he

(bought sight- unseen from a trusted board member.. as a G4!)

this is an 1825/4/3, Browning-3 coin, an R4 and a very nice original Good+ and almost VG.

  • OK - heres mine. I know that DLRC images are pretty bad - so I was inspired to find the original illustration from the Goldgerg Auction. I bought that 10c fast!

  • LOL most everyone here, like 90%, said it would be a "fugly overgraded hairlined cleaned wiped AT'd POS" from "that lousy Benson non-collector" - funny - when you go way back in the archives here those very same people were LOUDLY singing the highest praise re the Benson coins after seeing them in 2001 or so. It is a PR63 on the slab, but its a PR64. A lot of the Benson material was upgraded 1-3 points or so upon resubmission I have been told by several - but I don't need a new insert and possibly a fingerprint to tell me what I can see. Thanks - I like it to!

I wouldn't call it "expertise" other than knowing Heritage pictures can leave something to be desired, and that I had a hunch this coin would be a beauty in hand.

Here are Heritage's pictures of an 1862 Seated Half I bought a while back:

Here's a more "lifelike" view of the coin:
