If you could help one collector put together a collection...

If you could help one collector put together a collection and not profit in any way, who would you pick? No fantasies here. Tell us about a real collector and his or her collection, and how you might go about helping them build the collection.

For example, you might pick TDN and his Trade Dollars, or STEWARTBLAY and his Lincolns, but it seems to me those jobs are just about done. Not much fun to be had there. And how much help could you really give them?

Or you might pick Lord M and his holey collection.

Or Braddick and his commem set.

braddick's low-grade commemorative set seems like it would be an interesting challenge, while not being impossible-hard.

I'd like to help the Smithsonian complete and upgrade its collection of 20th Century US coins. There's a lot of room for improvement.

I've also helped BAJJERFAN upgrade his morgan set with very little profit in it.

He needs all the help he can get image

His set is outstanding and ranked at 18th in the morgan registry

I'd help Boiler with his 1877 halves - would be great to see them ALL in one set.

Here we are in Saintguru's village and he really needs a 1932 saint (PCGS 65 or 66 preferably). Why can't we all chip in to help complete his set? He really needs a nice Xmas this year. Please give. With your donation we'll send a nice 8 x 10 photo of him and his family and you'll receive periodic letter from him showing the progress of his Saint regisrtry set. Call now.image

I've been working with another New England-area clip collector for years, he's working on date sets in all series and all types, Eliasberg style, while I'm focusing on the Lincolns and a nice type set. Simply stated, I'm helping him with quantity, and he's helping me with quality. Just this week I got a package from him with close to a dozen upgrades for my Lincoln set, and in return I'm trading him some obsolete type clips I've upgraded out of my type set.

It's a very rare symbiotic relationship we have going, in that after at least a dozen trades over the last three or four years, neither of us has ever felt like we got the raw end of a deal. Oh, this past October he also lent me his "library" of price lists and catalogs, going back to the early 1970s, for researching rarity and price history on Lincoln clips (I hope to write the book on them some day). How much fun do you think I'll have digging through these? image

  • Sorry, I can't help anyone else! I'm currently working on my own type set as well as building three different sets for three grandchildren! And, now my wife is starting a 20th Century Gold Type set! And guess who is going to pay for that???image

Actually, I've pointed out holded coins for Lord M, clipped coins for seanq, and an inked Collonial for Oldnewbie.

Even though I don't collect holded, clipped, or inked coins, I think these are really great collecting ideas and I love encouraging it.
