How would you describe this 1920 S buffalo.

Near the Mint Mark,
Is it Laminations or Die Crack, or some of each.

I'll vote for "lamination." Other than that, VF-30 detail, looks original, few scattered nicks.
  • Hard to say with the indention in the "N" but I would say die crack as a wag

Is the metal raised on the E of five and the area between E and C ? That looks like a Die Scratch. The other stuff, no idea.

    Ken,
Yes the line is raised going across the C and up the E.

That looks like possibly two Die Scratches. They are both straight line marks. I cannot see if there is raised metal on the V going into the glob of metal located on the mound. If there is raised metal on the V then I would say its a Die Break instead of the scratches.

The same line crosses the top of the V.

Die Break IMO. Sort of weird how straight line it is though.

  • To me it looks like some kind of die damage and not a lamination. The raised likes are obvious signs of a die crack or scratch/gouge and the other mess, if it is related to the crack/scratch/gouge, must be where part of the die was damaged.
  • It almost looks like it says "FIVE GENTS".

Looking at the ground that the Buffalo is standing on just above "FI" in "FIVE" there appears to be lamination. Thus I would guess the "damage" is delamination. However, it might still be just damage due to a rough gauge. Tough to tell without it in hand.

    I would guess die damage.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • Looks like a strange combination of a planchet defect and two major die scratches. There appears to be missing metal on the coin in the letters, but clearly two major raised lines from a die defect. It's possible that the die caused both features, and perhaps that's more likely than having the combined planchet defect and dies scratches. Hard to tell.
