SNMAN, the images make it extremely difficult to tell - the reverse looks more lustrous and is a different color from the obverse, and the obverse angle is a tough one to view the coin by.

But, my guess would be high grade AU. I say that because there looks to be light wear above the upper left shoulder of the buffalo and perhaps on his mid-section and upper left leg, among other areas. Ditto for the upper hair section (edited to add: and forehead) of the Indian on the obverse. Hopefully what I'm seeing is simply some weakness in strike and the coin is mint state.

  • Hey, that thing is defective. It only has 3 legs!

The obverse looks corroded to me, but it is hard to say from those images.

If it is authentic, EF-45, probably dipped/cleaned.

No need to have it authenticated. 3 legged buffaloes are easy to tell if they are real or not. You have a real one. The problem is the cleaning.

  • So hard to grade these, especially from these pictures, but I would say this is AU.

    Merc,

will pcgs accept a cleaned/dipped coin? or will they return it?

SNMAN, PCGS grades coins that have been dipped. Many coins in PCGS holders have been dipped, and it's often virtually impossible to know whether a coin has been dipped or not.

However, if a coin has been over-dipped, the surfaces/appearance will be affected negatively (the coin might look extremely unnatural and/or dull), and in such cases the coin might receive a "no-grade" due to the over-dipping. That is often a judgment call.

PCGS also grades coins which have been lightly cleaned and typically down-grade the coin's grade to take the cleaning into account. If a coin has been cleaned too heavily, it will receive a no-grade. That is also a judgment call.

    Nice 3 legger! I'd say AU50.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • AU55+. Nice coin, I hope it hasn't been worked.

  • That's a coin worth sending to NCS. If it has a chance in the grading room, then NCS will send it along to NGC, but if not, they will provide the authentication and slab it in a "details" slab. The coin looks like it had a bad cleaning, meaning that it still has residue on the surface. NCS will clean the coin properly and will stabilize the surface. If left out of a slab after NCS cleans it, it will tone more naturally (under the right conditions). Slabbed, it will usually remain pure white. In any case, it's a worthwhile coin that should be treated with some appropriate care in order to keep it from further degradation. (BTW, I definitely do not recommend NCS a great deal - only in cases such as this one, where past actions have degradated the coin.)

  • Doesn't appear cleaned to me.However, your camera work is reflecting the color of the carpet or cloth it is on, blue/blue tint, green/green tint, ontothe coin. Judging from from pics, real-the three legged looks like it is urinating, which it should. Weak strike, AU58.
