1. Which coin company serves their clients the best?

2. Why do you say so?

3. What do you collect or deal in?

Comments

  • 1. Rare Coins of new Hampshire.

    2. They offer great slabbed type coins at a resonable price and excellent customer service with fast, secure shipping.

    3. I collected type coins in the past and they were my #1 dealer.

    The future:

    1. ANACONDA rare coins

    2. Several respected numismatists searching want lists for customers and giving excellent service. Quality, PQ coins are a must. The company will suprise the hobby and grow almost overnight.

    3. And they might even offer a few sample slabs here or thereimage

I'm going to limit to the major companies and companies represented on this board as the smaller dealers that I deal with locally that have merchandise which I like, well, some don't even have a storefront nor do they sell on the internet.

The best 'service' and 'impression' I've got from any company on these boards, and granted I am extremely biased as he seems to share similar taste in coins, is peaco*k coins (braddick's company). In the relatively small number of transactions I've made with him, He's shown that he has excellent tastes in coins, sells them at *very* reasonable price, appreciates the history behind them, and seems to go out of his way to always please the customer. There are also a couple other dealers on this board that I haven't done business with yet but would without hesitation (JadeRareCoin, MichaelDixon). I collect Holed, Worn, and Specialy coins (Hobo Nickels, Potty Dollars, etc) primarily, and while I have a large holding of traditional coins with higher numistic value, I don't really actively collect them anymore.

With that said, I have to compliment ANACONDA Rare Coins on their exceptional taste in the coins that they offer, if I ever go back to actively collecting traditional coins, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from them.

Seriously, in no particular order: Pinnacle, Legend, Jade, DLRC, Heritage, Harry Laibstain.
    Why? Personal experience.

I'll go with Mark Feld (and no, not because I do work for him). He has twice found exactly what was on my want list, and, at the same time, within my price range (the first time was with Pinnacle, the second time solo). He is always willing to answer a question, and is as genuinely honest as they come.

fast, easy, cheap...wait a minute, that sounds like one of Cameron's dates...
  • Mark Feld -- without question. He is about as honest as it gets. Mark has a tremendous eye for quality. His experience and pedigree is solid. As a former grader he knows PQ from borderline coins. He will give you advice that might be against his best interest. He looks at the long term picture, not just the quick sale.

If Mark makes a recommendation on a coin, I usually take it. I'll even buy sight unseen as long as he approves it.

When I first posted to this forum I noted the following:

    --------------------------------------------------------------
A few comments on recent forum discussions..... favorite dealers :

I haven't returned to the thread recently but I remember, at the time I last saw it, no one had mentioned David Lawrence Rare Coins. DLRC is high on my list. I think, for online, they are the best. Their pics are nice enough that you know, almost every time, whether or not the coin is right for you. All my transactions with DLRC have been 100% problem free. I've bid on some of their online auctions. I've let high bids go sitting like ducks and have almost always won the lot way below my high. I do think they're honest in their auctions. It seems to me that not many collectors are bidding DLRC web auctions, at this time. I've won several nice coins, with no competition, at what I feel are very decent prices. DLRC is definitely nice.

Dealers, other than DLRC, I like :

    Joe O'Connor - thanks, Joe!
Pinnacle Rarities - Scott Schechter, thanks Scott!
David Hall Rare Coins - thanks, Van, older than me by only a few days!
Anaconda Rare Coins - yes, Adrian is a 100% great guy to deal with. Seriously!
Carl Wohlforth - Carl's Coins, terrific numismatist, very nice person image
Albanese Rare Coins - Dave, thanks! I am SO glad AC was in London that week!!
Rare Coins of New Hampshire - Paul Battaglia, helpful at all times!

And, FWIW, not mentioning someone here doesn't mean I don't like them or respect them. There are several people I would like to do business with, when time and money are right.
    --------------------------------------------------------------

My .02¢ hasn't changed. I think overall, if you can make your own decisions, David Lawrence is tops. No one has a better functioning website. If you buy from them, their service is excellent. If you have a problem (two minor glitches in all my orders) they deal with it promptly and fairly. You might remember when someone recently brought up how it was a huge hassle on the DLRC website to wade through auction lots while trying to view non auction coins, John Feigenbaum came to the forum a few hours later, thanked everyone for their comments, said he would look into it and then made the change. I like that kind of attitude. I like their obvious energy and dedication to the greater hobby. If you've ever read _Tales from the Bourse_, by John's dad, David Lawrence, you know DLRC is a family business turned into a true all American success story.

Why do I say so? Because I like quality customer service. I like fair prices. I like being able to trust people I buy from. I don't mind giving credit where credit is due. And, no, they haven't paid me to say any of this.

What do I collect? USA type coins/currency. I have a few nice high grade items, including a couple of pop 1 3CN. What I really like is nice choice "original dirt" circ. I'm working on a set of 1943 .01¢ in PCGS MS 68, and a set of type 1 Standing Liberty .25¢ in MS 67 FH. I've completed a set of 1954 PCGS MS 66 FBL .50¢, for my brother. I thought I would get back into numismatics with relatively modest goals. I also collect White House Easter eggs and mid 60's Liddle Kiddle toys, MIP, (as gifts for my better half and her family). I collect good friends and worthwhile life experiences too image

Does that answer all of your questions?! When I get into having a want list I'll find out more on this who is good and who is bad issue.

Good luck, Adrian. It's always fun to see your pics and read your banter. I admire your taste in coins!

    KJ

  • Just to pick three: Rare Coins of New Hampshire--great service, coins as described, and they back up their coins 100% to the point that a raw coin's grade is guaranteed to grade as sold or better, no questions asked. Legend because they have some premium material and are honest in their descriptions, and Gus Tiso because he has a great selection of Morgans that are reasonably priced. Lots of others, but that's 3 at the top.

    1. As others have stated: Rare Coins of New Hampshire

    2. Their dedication and patience in not only selling coins, but willing to spend countless hours in educating as well. Jon (Much more so for me) and Warren (At times) have made this hobby so much less frustrating and that much more enjoyable. Words can not possibly describe the ease and pleasure it is to work with these guys. I also enjoy that they stand behind their coins 100%, and are always willing to let me upgrade past purchases without and headaches. One the other things that Jon has helped me out with, is maintaining focus, knowing my collecting goals just as well as I do, this has saved me many headaches.

Since working with them, I am less fearfull of making the larger purchases, and have recently done so more often. Dealers that can make us tight ass collectors happy and comftable, may be surprised, at how much more money we may throw their way.

    3. MS RB Indian head Cents for myself, and circulated type coins for the little lady.

Jon I expect 50% off that 1886 type 2 nowimage

  • Which company serves their clients best?

Not a company that buys coins at retail prices from established dealers, then turns around and puts them up on Ebay at considerably higher prices, thus affording the opportunity for a collector to pay way too much and be ripped !!!

    Best,

Not pointing fingers, just making a general comment.

I deal with 3 firms for 90+% of my coin needs (Pinnacle, Gold Rush Gallery, and Legend), and they all have some similarities and some differences.

The similarities: Experienced numismatists, general and specialty expertise, full service, hard-working, full-time, honesty, credibility, respected by their peers and (especially) competitors, and set up at most major shows and auctions. The other major similarity is that the individuals in the three firms are people I like on a personal level, people I can spend an evening with and not discuss coins, and people that I am apt to become friends with over time.

    1. Larry Whitlow

    2. Great selection, customer service, and quality for the coins I look for. Mike Printz is great to deal with.

    3. Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickels, and most other U.S. type coins.

Not everyone collects what I collect so my list is a little different than most.

    Dealers
R&I. Never disappointed, never need to return, always available.
Scotsman. Diverse inventory, great prices, likes to play "let's make a deal"

Members I would (and have) send money blindly to:

Russ; must have 15/15 eyesight on coins. If he likes it, buy it!
Marty's Midwest House of Deep Cameos (works at Canon to distract spouse)
    Don's Pre-Owned Coin Haus. If it's dated 1965 he's seen it.

    Interesting thread.

Larry Whitlow, Legend , Pinnacle, Mark Feld, Numismatic Enterprises (Mike DeFalco), Larry Sheperd, Wayne Herndon and Anaconda .

What I like best about these eight companies, when you call to ask about

a coin you are interested in, they will tell you the whole and absolute

truth. They offer Nice coins, good service and pleasent attitude. They will always offer a fair price

both selling and buying coins back.

R& I Coins helped me put together my Former #1 Pr Kennedy set and has always been a company at the top of the heap.
While I have not done a lot of bussiness with David Hall Rare Coins, they have always been fair in discussing price and the
atributes af any coin they sell.

Board members I have had excellant experiences with have been AKRick, Peakock Coins (Pat Braddick), John Emerson(Bustman),
Quatrocoins,Compucheap, IWOG, CoinLieutenant and Manof Coins.

The fact is, I have never had a bad experience with any person or dealership which has been a member on these Forums
for a substantial period of time.

  • I appreciate the responses. Obviously I'm expanding my coin business and just wanted to hear what some of you percieve as some of the important issues when it comes to picking a dealer from whom to buy. Thanks!

[Also, an interesting "for what it's worth"....with regard to my law practice: I have often said that if I wrote a book on how to have a successful personal injury law practice and told everything, it would be facilate only a very small fraction of lawyers in having a successful practice. I believe this because it takes more than just book knowledge to suceed in any business. It takes courage, discipline, hard work, insight and a whole host of other talents totally unrelated to knowledge. It most importantly it also takes the willingness to go broke and fall flat on your face and be totally humiliated in front of everyone who is watching you, which of course is the reason why so many people don't go into business for themselves in the first place. (my wife and I now have 6 lawyers working for us and a non-lawyer staff of 41 people - not bad for a guy with the maturity level of a 17 year old, eh?)]
