Getting rid of Jon Lieber for Jaret Wright

bad, bad move.

Lieber pitched very well last year and in the post season. Wright stunk it up in the post season.

Was Lieber part of the deal? If so, I missed that and agree.

Houston made alot of starting pitchers look bad in the post season, but you are right Lieber definetely outpitched him. The one good thing is that Wright is younger and pitchers always seem to pitch best around the magical age of 29.

DirtyHarry, Lieber was not part of the deal, but the Yanks signed Wright for the same money Lieber probably would have accepted. Where are the Yankees' heads. Lieber was excellent the 2nd half of the season. As a matter of fact, besides El Duque, Lieber had the lowest ERA of any starting pitcher.

There is still a chance to sign Lieber. I think the Yankees wanted both Lieber and Wright. They may not be able to get Johnson after all.

Kinda wish the Phils had tried to keep Milton though ...

Phils still don't have a number one or a sweet #2 pitcher. Tons of strikeouts in the lineup and a bad
catcher at the end of his career. I'm hoping someone on the team has decided to follow the Bonds
training and diet routine this off-season!image

The Phils were stupid in building a hitters park. They had a great young pitching staff with Wolf, Myers, top minor league prospects, etc. They should have taken the Braves route and built a large ball park to protect them. Houston made the same mistake with Enron/Minute Maid.

Lieber is with the Phillies. This is no improvement for the Yankees. Getting one decent pitcher and letting another one go. It is a wash at best. They are right back where they started from. Was Lieber really that bad for them not to resign him? Is Wright so much better? No one really knows if Wright will pitch well under NY pressure, while Lieber proved to be reliable. Is it me, or was this a stupied move.

The Yankees are going no where with improvement. They cannot afford to get rid of Brown now. They also let Olerud go, but Tino Martinez would not be a bad choice to sign, so they will be fine at first. I just prefered Olerud, that's all.

Wow - this just gets better and better, eh? Lieber pitched his ass off for the Yankees last year, and they don't resign him? Instead, they go after a terrible postseason pitcher (Wright) for the same money?

Top that off with reports that Pavano is coming to Boston (and Pedro is coming back as well), and life is good.

That is a very strange course of events. There is not much more they can do to improve the bullpen. Kind of makes me wonder, as this scenario was a "wash" for them monetarily, if they see Wright as possibly better trade bait to swing a deal for another starter.

Maybe Wright is trade bait. I don't rule out the Yankees practicing some clever strategy. As it stands now, The Yankees have a good bullpen. Their chances of signing a staff ace are getting slimmer and slimmer as the free agent pool is drying up. Johnson is still a possibility. Pavano might not even sign with the Yankees. They missed out on Leiter and Radke. Martinez will go back to the Red Sox---I don't want him as a Yankee anyway.

Do they really think getting rid of Brown is that smart of an idea now?

  • I agree with Gemmy.

Wright had bad numbers with no DH in the national league.
His ERA stayed down because the number 9 hole was filled with
poor hitters. Also, he had a great pitching coach in Leo Mazzone.

This is a bad, bad move getting him for the same money that could
    have kept Leiber in town.

The Yankees are in real bad shape right now.

I see their only hope is Vasquez returning to pre-All Star game form.

The Diamondbacks are still pissed off at Steinbrenner for putting the
screws to them on the David Wells deal. There is NO WAY they are
going to let the Yankees get Randy Johnson unless they can rape
    Steinbrenner in the process.
  • Ctsoxfan,

Would you rather have Lowe or Pavano ?

I also think Arroyo is someone you can't let get away.

zsz70, I have always been a DLowe fan, but this season he really fell off (until the amazing postseason run, that is). Having said that, I would really rather have Pavano in the rotation, behind Schilling and Pedro - that immediately gives us the best starting pitching in baseball. Who knows if Theo can find a way to keep Lowe as well, but I would be content to let him go at this point rather than overpay him. Let's use that money and overpay Varitek - which is far more important.

Arroyo has great upside, I would like to see him at the end of the rotation for a few years and see if he develops consistency.

  • I hear so many Sox fans wanting Varitek.
They say that he can't go.

My only question is that he is 33.
Catchers who have caught as much as Jason
naturally start to slow down because of all the wear and tear.

I know Tek's legs are like oak trees, but I would rather spend
the money on a solid pitcher and get a middle of the road catcher.

In other words, I would rather sign Pedro, Lowe, and Pavano, and
give the catching job to Mirabelli, then sign Tek.

I know this isn't a popular opinion, because everyone loves Jason,
but pitching rules in postseason (i.e. cardinals).

You make a good point, which is why the Sox are hesitant to give him the 5 year deal that his agent wants. I bet they settle on 4 years, $40M - a lot of money, but he really is an anchor for our pitching staff and a great clubhouse guy as well.

One of my best friends is a die hard Yankee fan (imagine that!) and he says to me every time we talk Sox/Yankees - "The only guy I really want from the Sox on my team is Varitek. I would dump Posada in a minute for him".

  • OK,

    You are Theo.

You have to choose between Pavano and Tek.

I guess you take Tek ?

I take Pavano and look at it like the Nomar decision.

I tell Tek that he can take 3 years at 30 million or we
go after Pavano. Paying Tek 10 million at the age
of 37 is just not good baseball sense.

Tough choice - I guess this is why Theo makes the big bucks, eh?

If I had to choose, I know that not signing Pavano might force him to his second choice (maybe in money only) behind Boston (Yankees), so I would look really hard for a way to sign him, especially since he wants to come here. V-Tek is a tougher choice, because you want to reward him for past performance to a degree, but not at the expense of your future. Maybe Jason takes less for a four year deal to stay "home", work with a top-flight pitching staff, and we can have both. Tough call.

The 2nd year back after TJ surgery is historicaly when a pitcher regains old form. I hate this move, letting Lieber go is a mistake IMO.image
