Yup - it's a newp I've been waiting patiently to acquire!
The Carter family kept their coins in custom made holders - that apparently had just a bit of sulpher in them! It's a look that's instantly recognizable as Carter toning - golden centers with blue peripheries... often with tab marks:
TDN, I have a present for you. That 1840 proof was mine at one point, so I compiled the provenance. Here's the pedigree from my notes:
1840 - ex Jerome Kern; The Jerome Kern Collection, B. Max Mehl's Golden Jubilee Sale 5/23/50:810 ("Perfect Brilliant Proof," $151); Amon G. Carter, Sr., to Amon G. Carter, Jr.; The Amon G. Carter Jr. Family Collection, Stack's 1/84:246 ("Brilliant Proof," $6600); Private collection; Stack's 3/20/01:439 ($25200); Martin Paul (The Rarities Group) and Tom Caldwell (Northeast Numismatics) to The Sunnywood Collection; sold to Legend Numismatics 8/1/02. Note: Possibly earlier ex Frederic Geiss, B. Max Mehl 2/18/47:334 ($125), as the Kern coin did not come from WGC. Compare WGC 1/20/45:147 (plated; not this coin).
By the way, the 1844 proof in the Carter Sale had the exact same toning. It wasn't just the "album tab" electric blue that I loved, but also that sunny yellow that covers most of the coin.
P.S. To clarify my speculation about the coin coming from Geiss, most of Jerome Kern's seated proofs came from either Geiss or WGC ("World's Greatest Collection" of F.C.C. Boyd). Since the WGC coin was plated, and was not this coin, I surmised that it may quite likely be the 1840 from the Geiss sale. The Geiss coin was not plated.
