Toothpaste can work fine, but it's pretty gritty, so you could follow with some of the other suggestions and get it even smoother.
oh, and please elaborate on the toothpaste ...

Todd - I just buffed a generous amount of toothpaste into the plastic with cheesecloth. Toothpaste is pretty gritty so it may work best in extreme cases like this.
There was a thread here a couple of years ago about a high-tech product, found in auto parts stores, that was originally designed for aircraft windshields. Wish I could remember the name.
Another solution is a reholder - $5.
