how does sgs get all those 70`s

I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about this. almost all the 70`s i see on ebay have been graded by them. how do they compare to other grading companies? I don`t have many slabbed coins, but have alot i would like to get slabbed. I`ve never heard of them before i started ebaying.

  • I would have to say that out of the 19 sets of MS70 have all had some kind of flaw ranging from a die crack at k3 to the base of the hairline on a 1999 dime. All of the pennies have had carbon spotting.....just a bunch of generic proof coins that didn't pass scrutiny from any dealers or collectors.
This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM image

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
  • so your saying they are a little SOFT on the grading? i`ve never sent anything to be graded and am still learning. from what i`ve seen so far, ANACS is probably my best bet. I have about 150 bu Franklin halves that were still in bank wrappers when i got them. I would like to get a few of them slabbed to see how close my grading is on them. don`t have alot of money to waste on grading though.

  • There's probably a good reason why you haven't heard of SGS until you signed up on E-Bay. image

All I know about SGS is that they have virtually no credibility in the world of coin collecting. Type in SGS in the search box on this forum and you can see several threads brought up about SGS. You will see that submitting to SGS would just be a waste of money, and that many of their so-called 70s have flaws.

ANACS has a lot of credibility and are widely considered in the top three grading services behind NGC and PCGS, so that could be a good place to start. There are a lot of Franklin Half collectors that could better advise you on where to submit. Good luck.

Buy the coin... not the grade... SGS has that backwards. Watch what the prices of SGS coins sell for on Ebay... then watch what PCGS 70's sell for... I rest my case.

Welcome kidd, your questions are not stupid and its good you ask them. Sometimes people from these substandard grading companies come here and ask these questions and people get in trouble for answering them. Hope you stick aroundimage-------BigE

SGS uses only three grades, 68, 69, and 70.
  • Seems to be some good info in this thread!

image to kidd and proofman48. Never be afraid to ask questions here before spending your hard earned money. Even if you get blasted it will be worth it! Alot of Great People here who want to help!!! Your best bet is to buy coins already slabbed by the Top Three TPG's!! Buy some books, read them, and as your skills develop then you can buy Raw. If you do this your collecting future will be much happier!!! Just my 2 cents, Lee
  • SGS grades so many 70's because discriminating collectors know the best, and send only their finest coins to SGS for grading.

How long till that's quoted in one of their auctions?
  • < how does sgs get all those 70`s >

Easy. Start with a 65 then write 70 on the label. image

    << <i>How does SEGS get all those 70 s? >>

That's easy they manufacture them just as they many of their grades. There is a good reason why SEGS coins sell for less.

  • SGS is Star Grading Service owned by the ebay seller Aboncom. Since he owns the service and is also the major (only?) submitter, and the grader he pretty much gets the grade he wants. (And he has said that he doesn't submit anything that would get less than a 69.)

Why BillJones brought up SEGS I don't know. SGS is not SEGS.

If you send me coins I'll call them 70, probably cheaper too.

    Ahh....

My mistake, but what I wrote about SEGS still stands. Their grades are generally more liberal than the "big two," and their coins sell at lower prices as a result.

  • well if he is the only submitter, that would explain why i`ve never heard of them before. so your saying all i have to do is put my coins in a slab and mark them as 70`s and i could sell a $100 coin for $12.50 too. LOL
