Poll: Which of these two 1945-D Jeffersons is AT?

Two 1945-D Jefferson Nickels are coming up for sale in Teletrade's next Rainbow auction. One is graded ANACS MS-60 Artificially Toned, the other NGC MS-68*.

Please take my poll and let me know what you think given the Teletrade pictures below

  • This is fun! I wish the pictures were larger but I think #1 is AT and #2 is NT.

I'd say #1 is At, #2 is NT.

  • I'll update with larger pics in a minute.
  • The toning looks similar on both coins. The top coin looks like it has fewer contact marks so is probably the NGC 68*. I voted both are cooked. I dipped some circulated Mercury dimes when I was a kid and put them in a Whitman folder. After close to 40 years a few were really neat looking image I was told I cooked the coins image So if I cooked my Mercs perhaps somebody "cooked" these coins as well? Basically I'm saying I really don't know image

#1 looks AT and #2 looks more natural so that's how i voted, but.................since you gave the grades in the opener it seems clear that the top coin is the MS68*. JMHO, of course.

I've had some war nickels that were passed onto me by my dad in the early 50's that looked similar to these. Nothing was done to mess with them so I voted NT for both.

Edited to add: Because a TPG does or doesn't call a coin NT or AT doesn't make it so.
  • I'd have to pretty much agree with Carl and Al. This isn't my series at all, but if you ask me, they both look suspicious.

I just can't see NGC handing out a 68* to coin 2, with the lack of definition on the reverese, especially the steps, and those ticks on Jeff's cheek.

So, I went with 1. I'll trust NGC knows the toning on Jeffs better than I.

  • I`m new to the toned coins, and to this forum for that matter but i`d have to guess that 2 is NT. i may be wrong, but it won`t be the first or the last time.

I also think 1 is AT and 2 is NT. I've seen a couple with similar looks to #2 but none like #1.

Yeah, guess I was fooled. But I have seen some like #2 that were fine. I wonder if it looks different in person?

My assessment is that they are both NT, but the first one is the NGC and the second the ANACS.

I was going to say: #1 is cooked. #2 is NT.

Although, NGC may be right about #1 and don't agree with ANACS...I think that coin is NT.

I did not vote but I think they are both NT... Having Jeffersons graded reads like A Tale of Two Cities... or perhaps a tale of two grading services.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • I guessed right, because I figured you were setting us up a little, plus the second one would likely not get an NGC star, even if it was NT.

Interesting thread and proves once again that sometimes in the NT, AT debate we can't tell the difference nor can the TPG's always tell either. If the market accepts it, it gets slabbed.

If one is AT I would say #2. Really I think both are Good Coins and NT.
