Best book for a large cent collector?

What is the best large cent book? I have heard of the Sheldon book but wonder if it is out of date. Also a Breen book but it only goes to 1814 and I want something that covers the entire series.

Any thoughts on the Newcomb book? It is also old, originally published in 1944 I hear.

Any ideas would be great.

There are those who have referred to my nose as a large scent collector.

And there are others that have referred to you as things we can't post on C.U. Forums. image

My suggestion is to stop collecting coins. Women think of coin collectors as nerds and most coin collectors are an extreme embarassment to their families.

Hey! Stop hijacking my thread! I need some serious advice. Let me hear from some large cent experts, then we can get back to the wacky stuff.

Are you asking for advice from experts on large cents, or from large people who are experts on cents? imageimage

Blade, the best early large cent book is the Breen Book to 1814. Then you will need the book on middle dates by John Wright which will take you through 1839.

William Noyes also has books, the first on early date and the second on middle date Large Cents (not familiar with the Wright book, but I also have the Breen book which was mentioned). You are S.O.L. re later date Large Cents (1839-1857).

Sheldon is a realtively good book. My copy has plates in the back, which aid in attribution of the major varieties. The descriptions are also easier to interpret (for me) than Newcomb. Some copies of Newcomb are handwritten - be sure to get a typed version if you do. For the later varieties (1830s-1850s) attribution is extremely difficult and requires noticing minute diagnostics - I usually use an attribution expert for those coins.

Sheldon is good for the early dates, if you get one with good pics.

Wright is best for middle dates, IMHO.

Grellman is best for late dates, again, IMHO.

I use the Wright and Grellman books more than any others. They are both outstanding.
