<< <i>That said, why would anyone pay good money to holder such a nice raw coin?? >>
I really like the coin, but those criss cross obverse scratches really bother me. I would like to see if PCGS also likes it or bags it. I will keep it either way, but for $16.00 what the heck.
Since nobody else mentioned it, I'll taint my reputation:
Adjustment marks?? I guess it would be odd that they would still be visible at this grade, but they do sorta have that look, and appear to be worn with the coin.

I was thinking possible adjustment marks too, considering the location. Who knows though.
Tommytype.....Would adjustment marks be on the devices and in the fields? ER....Wow, If PCGS holdered that coin they should holder my coin. I know this is a low grade coin, but I would like to know if the scratches would keep it from being holdered at PCGS. Kiefer.....Below is an attachment a image of the reverse
Agreed with the consensus. I don't see much value added by slabbing this one. But even if one was to submit it, between the TPG's more liberal standards for early U.S. coinage and the possibility that these are the remains of some fairly deep adjustment marks, I think this coin would slab with no real question.
Plus, I don't think these scratches are too far beyond "normal wear" for an AG coin. The more a coin is worn, in general the more it is expected that some minor flaws will be added to the coin. A higher grade coin in the post-adjustment mark era of U.S. coinage might not be slabbed with these marks; this coin, IMO, almost certainly would.

If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!

It might have been inflicted either at the mint (adjustment marks) or sometime later (graffiti), and has snce worn down to be hardly intrusive.
I guess PCGS would slab it, but ironically if it was a higher grade coin I'd guess they would BB it.
