How Do You Protect Your Coins?

I'm thinking of getting a fire-proof safe for xmas to protect my most valuable coins. Do you use a safe to store your coins? Do you insure your coins? What about safety deposit boxes?

If it is a 1903-S Barber Dime I bury it in the back yard, for get where I put it, get out the metal detector, nail it with the trowel, leave it in the driveway and run over it!

Now, really, anything of value is in the Safety Deposit Box. Even if you have a safe, the valuable stuff should be at the bank.

  • Folks- did anyone ever tell you NOT to put money in a safe deposit box? Back a bunch of years ago ( and still) the banks cleared out old safe deposit boxes, and many people had a frigging field day! Buy a gun, get a rottie, or a dobie, or one mean ass wife- don't use a safe deposit box....

Depends on how much your most valuable coins are worth. If it's over 10k I would go with the safety deposit box/insurance route. For my coins I like to keep them around so they can be viewed more frequently.

  • .45 ACP Colt Longslide and .45/70 Gvmt, Both great up-close, and the 45/70 is a 300 grain semi-jacketed hollowpoint great 1000 yard weapon, good for engine blocks and gas tanks, and if that fails, Pitt Bull with AIDSimage

I don't know where you live, but the state I live in the government takes posession after the bank can't find an renter. The bank and the state try to figure out who the stuff belongs to and then they place a hold on it if not claimed for five years. You should have heirs listed, so if something happens to you they know who to contact. You should also have a second person as a co-box renter, so if something does happen to you, they know what bank your stuff is in.

There is no safer place than a safety deposit box....

  • Anyone have solid opinions ? I am with cardsfan...my collection is not worth over 10k, and I would like to keep em near, so safety dep box might not be worth it. thanks for the heads up on the 'unclaimed' saf dep box situations
