When Bad Things Happen to Good Coins (Guess the Grade) ::ANSWER REVEALED::

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,963 ✭✭✭✭✭
The 1903-S Barber dime has always been a semi-key date for the series. Even in grades of GD04 it's a $60. coin and that price jumps to $350. in FN12 and doubles again for an XF40.

Now, here is one with an "issue" or two. Ok, let's face it: It has definitely seen better days!
I know the photos aren't the best, but what is the grade you would NET it at?

It's ANACS Holdered, and I'll show the full slab in about an hour.

Is that corrosion? Maybe it was a metal detector find. Wonder if LordM found it on one of his digs. That would be awesome to find a rare coin like that.

Re: Net grade? XF45, assuming it is an unc coin. If an AU coin, then VF30.

So, fess up Pat, how much was she?

    Congratulations on the purchase.

Ouch. You sure hate to see that on such a tough date. The images are a little blurry (reverse) and the details are hard to see. Net vg is my guess.

    Multi Struck AU 55

I don't know what is going on with the color. It is too hard to see in the blurry image.

    Nice Catch!

My guess is a combination of dig and, perhaps the trowel tapped into it a few times when it was dug up! Seriously, it's corroded and pocked. I gingerly cleaned it up a bit before submission, but man, it's in bad shape.

Somehow though I like it. It's got gumption and character.

(Answer posted in a few minutes although so far no one's got it...)

how about VF details, corroded, cleaned, damaged, net Good.

I'd rather have a problem free VG than this coin, but would prefer this to an AG.

I'd net grade it at Poor-01
    When in doubt, don't.
  • ms 60- net grade au50 - due to the shovel strike on the reverse.
  • Fine details, Net G-04.

I'm really sorry about that coin. I can't tell much about it from the damage. image

It has a full LIBERTY and other detail I thought would place it in the XF classification. I knew the NET grade would be pretty dang low but was a bit surprised at ANACS conclusion.

    Oh well! Fun coin, nonetheless.

VF details net no idea. Being smashed is about the only thing that coin has not seen.

  • I was right about the Fine details but was off on the net grade. The picture is really blury and it was hard to grade from.

That coin has better than fine details. Look at the hairline and the knot on the reverse. ANACS probably thought Ugly deserves less of a market grade and then netted it correctly. image
