You can never know or learn enough ... you can only hope (aside from the geniuses among us) to become proficient in your few favorite series. Education keeps us going ...

Greetings Mr Paseo!!! I have not seen you post for awhile, good to hear from you.

I feel they same way. Some of the people on these boards are amazing! One thing for sure, we all have talents. I just keep asking questions stupid or not, but I keep learning. One of these days I hope I will be able to keep up!

There are some here who have forgotten more than I will ever know about even my favorite series, but that sure does'nt keep me from putting in my 2 cents.

It seems that one of the great things about this board is the vast knowledge possessed within our ranks. To think any one person can possess the knowledge we have to offer combined is mind boggling (and probably not possible).

Being rather new here, I haven't figured out who's who and what's what sometimes (i.e. upfront, strightforward, hidden agenda, flat out BS) ... but I appreciate much of what I take the time to read and can learn. I have asked a few questions, and recieved some well thought answers. In fact in one case, I found a bit of a mentor for a subject, and my pictures went from blah to pretty dang good in a matter of days.

Knowing that our knowledge is limited to what we have been exposed to is the first part of being able to learn more. Keep asking questions, keep reading ... and if your pictures (website) are any clue as to what you do ... continue to help keep the faith of this great country alive (USN 83-89 here).

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

  • Altho I am no expert in any coin field, and can't grade without a book, I still feel that I have learned a lLOT - even if a needle in a haystack in the past 5 years of collecting. I have much more to learn, of course, but at least I have filled up a couple of empty nodules in the ole brain. I do feel very knowledgeable compared to what I used to know and compared to what non-collectors know. I would say I am a 2 or 3 on the scale of 10 knowledge scale ........ maybe pushing a 4 - for BASIC knowledge, that is.
  • I would like to say thanks for all the informative posts as well as the help I have recieved here, Dan

Hey, Ray, they're just coins! Relax, there's no test unless you want one. Chill and enjoy. Learn what you can but don't have a break down over it. From what I've read you already know what's important in life!

I wasn't aware there was a time limit, or at least not a specific known in advance limit. ("Here is your new hobby sir. You have exactly 5 years, 3 months, 8 days, and 2.636 hours to learn as much as you can about it.")

<< <i>I just tease myself comming over here on the coin side of the forums... I'm hoping the new year brings more cash flow in the coin fund area >>

The problem is that comeing here and learning more just expands the the interets that you want that limited coin fund to cover. So even if it grows it won't be enough because knowledge of 'neat things' guarantees thet there will be more you want than you can afford.

I have published a book on Lincoln cents, and some even go so far as to call me an expert on the subject...

With that having been said, I learn something new every time I come here. I have been involved in the hobby for 25 years, and have been completely immersed in it for times often exceeding 8 hours per day every day for the past ten years. I write articles, edit and publish a monthly newsletter, and assist hundreds of people per month with their collections...but I still learn something every day. Sometimes what I learn would surprise you. Simple stuff you might expect an expert numismatist to know.

Instead of being embarassed by your learning, you should feel happy and proud that you have this forum and the people on this forum. Most of us who started collecting before the internet didn't have this benefit. Most of us had to learn out of the sheer benefit of experience coupled with books that were often nearly impossible to locate.

Use what you are learning to help others. Don't be shy with what you do know. Share it. Give of yourself back to the hobby every time you gain from it, and before you realize it, you will know enough about it that some novice collector will look to you for answers.

Knowledge is like rainwater, seeping into hard rocky clay.

It takes time, but eventually, it will penetrate .Give yourself 6 months

and then measure where you were and where you are. The search

for knowledge is a never ending quest. All we can do is to look and listen

and share what sum of knowledge we have, with others.

  • I know nothing also but I've been hanging around here for a little bit now and I do know I have picked up on a few things. Collecting coins is a double edged sword for me. I love the detail on some of them but by perfectionism is going to hurt my pocketbook if I don't watch it! I am diving into grading now and it seems like there is more to learn there for just one series than one could learn in a long time.
Biggest thing I have learned is if I take a picture of my coins with Halogen lights you guys grade it quite a bit lower than if I take a picture with incandesant!image
I lurk way more than I post so a big THANK YOU! to those that spread their knowledge!
