It's been said many times, many ways, but...

I have a few coins that are proofs and some high mint state (66+) that have what appears to be slight residue, a partial of a finger print, obvious things that surely when I submit will lower the grade. I have reviewed about 50 posts with regards to 'cleaning'. ms70, and other concoctions. What I would like to know from members and some of the experts on what to do? I have a steady hand usually when sober (I do fine crafted wood work).

I do have a few coins that I will to submit to NCS for restoration- I won't dare touch them mainly because they are my CC Morgans. the rest is worth excellent $$ if and when I do sell. I want to slab them, and am definitely afraid of the boys sending them back in a plastic coffin. obvious question is if they are cleaned properly, then submitted will the cleaning affect grade. There are no scratches, no bag marks, nothing! I viewed them for hours under an old 100X scope that I borrowed, covered every mm of all the coins (wife PO'd late nights), and yes they are some major key dates that I did not show anyone here in Texas yet.

What do I do folks? I really do need a little help.

HELP!!!!!!!!

  • Send them to NCS if you are afraid of messing them up by cleaning them improperly.

    Don't be a micro grader!!!!:

100x is way to much! 5-7X is all you need to grade, and 20x is max for alteration mintmark checks or for error coins.

  • I'm not sure what you're asking. A lot of dealers and long time collectors answer these threads. Just because they know from many expensive mistakes, what to do, doesn't mean you should try improving anything yourself. If you really don't like the way some of your material looks, send it in to NGC for and opinion on conservation. As a rule fingerprints are next to impossible to remove. Other problems may have inexpensive answers at NCS/Ngc. On the moderns you might just sell as-is, and move on to a nicer coin.

  • Cameron- thanks, but I wasn't trying to micro grade, wish I had a 20 or 30x scope to look, the 100x was a loan.
morgannut- The finger print is on a prrof Kennedy- and under the 100 would appear to not be a pressed in the coin look, it appears that it might have been lightly touched- would a cotton ball soaked in ms70 and then swiping it make it disappear? as for the good stuff it is going to NCS this year, so I can get back just in time for my 50th(9/25). From reading the many thought of cleaning/dipping, my thought was to go to a diluted strength of 25%, rinse in distilled water, air dry with a mini blow dryer (don't worry garage is a clean garage- no dust mites), review then if all is well put it back in it's mylar and send for grade. I'm basically trying to remove the filmy residue that has been on some of these coins for over 70 years- pops had them in the paper pouches, would take em out from time to time - and he smoked like a chimney- so they have junk on them but are from appearance very solid ms65 or better.

I'm looking for thought other than NCS for these coins- will they grade if I left them alone or would a good washing help?
  • Washing? Send them to NCS as is and let them (the professionals) decide what needs to be done. Based upon your questions, you will cause more harm then good to the coins.
