Any Speculation as to why this SMS 1998-S Kennedy sold at a 25% Discount?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,963 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just picked up this Kennedy off of eBay:

SP69 1998-S Kennedy

These generally sell for anywhere from $250 to $290. holdered in the 69 grade.
Can you identify the reason why this one sold for a little over $200.?

  • It is nearing Christmas and bargains are plentyful. Not as many people are bidding I have noticed, and you might be able to pick up some good coins in the next few weeks.

I agree. Looks like a bargain. I bought one last August during the doldrums for $205, and it was the cheapest I'd ever seen one sold. I believe the next few weeks will be quiet as many are occupied elsewhere. I think I'll shop some. image

Less collectors caught this auction thus fewer bids.

I made the same mistake a couple of years ago listing a 1974-S NGC MS68 Ike as an NCG. It sold for about half what it was worth. I know, because the buyer instantly flipped it back on eBay where it garnered the higher price!

Ever since then I'll check NCG on eBay and will turn up a score.

I think it is SOLEY because it is in NGC plastic instead of PCGS plastic. Just my thoughts.

I'm selling a bunch of coins that started to end yesterday and will complete tomorrow. Most are going under what they should sell for. I think it is simply a bad time to be selling. People are getting ready for Christmas.

I stand corrected. Please also notice that the second coin was listed in multiple categories.....did this help???

I made that statement because I have seen similar coins in opposite holders have a disparaging gap in prices.

I bought one a year or two back for $220, but that was from a board member who gave me a good deal!

  • Darn for just a moment I thought you had actually turned up something in an NCG slab other than a Morgan dollar. Frankly just turning up an NCG slab nowadays would be surprising.

Just as a point did a search for NCG 13 coins listed wrong.

I remember when these were selling for $300 plus. However I see that on Teletrade PCGS coins were selling for $240 so this price seems only a little low maybe more along the line of 10-15%.

    What about Teletrade buyer's fees?!
    (eBay doesn't have buyers fees.)

Really, even with the low price of $240. when you factor in their fees this one on eBay still went for a 20% discount. Plus, that $240. price was on the low end, even for Teletrade.

Does anyone really believe had this Seller simply listed this coin using NGC correctly in the header vs not, it would have sold for the same amount?

  • What is the difference between that one and this PCGS MS69 which just sold on EBAY a few minutes ago. This PCGS coin was less than 220.

  • No difference. I think I am still right in that there are less bidders now with the holidays fast approaching and people have to buy gifts.

Excellent points made in the last two posts.

Maybe now is the time to snatch these up?

I can't see them going much lower.

  • I didnt want one of these, but if I had, I would rather have the one in the PCGS holder. And it was not mis-listed in the title. It sold for the same as the "NCG".
So I think, at least in my situation and taking into account my preferences, the PCGS coin would have been the better buy. But I did not want one at all so it is really a moot point other than to have something to talk about on this thread! image

Pat, my guess is the ones that sold at $240 were the reserve and given the price of the PCGS coin with only two bidders it would confirm for at least now that the price has reached a new recent low, regardless of the reasons. I can remember Heritage auctions where $300 was the reserve. I think its obvious that the two sellers on Ebay and Teletrade set their reserves to reflect the reality of today's price. I would speculate that a $300 reserve would not be met at the present, its the way of the coin market. image Who knows if the price will return?

Lastly Pat the $240 was for a coin graded by PCGS so factor in the discount for an NGC coin and I still maintain my number is correct.
