1909-s vdb problem coin. What do you think it is worth?

I can say with confidence it would be an ms66 red coin except for some parallel horizontal hairlines on the obverse, mostly left obv, a little up on to the portrait. It looks like it was once wiped accross with something. You can't see the hairlines unless you use correct lighting and hold the coin at the right angle for them to catch the light.

  • ICG or NCS slab?

  • The color is orig, or at least looks orig, depending on how bad the lines are it may still be slabable by PCGS, proof coins with hairlines get graded all the time. Obviously it hurts the grade. with the spots and lines 63 or 64RD??? What do they go for? I would think that, even with the lines 63RD money would be a good deal. I wish all MS63's would look like that.

It's currently still in its segs ms64rd holder (holder denotes wiped obverse too). I've come very close to cracking it out several times. I've been thinking of sending it to ncs. Maybe anacs? I don't think pcgs would grade it. It does sure look nice, and is certainly original color, and ms66+ quality otherwise. There are no spots on the coin even though there appear to be some in the image (likely shadows of dust on the holder).

Does anyone know what coins like this end up being wiped with??? (that causes the hair lines in particular)

  • I would say the coin would still get you 1500-2000 on ebay.

It may have been "wiped" by a coin folder with the plastic covers. I have seen a few nice lincolns from old collections damaged this way.

Submit to ANACS first. IF they net grade it, leave it in that holder. It is a nice coin and you could sell it in their slab with a net grade for good money. IF they don't Net grade it, submit it in the ANACS slab to PCGS.

I'd estimate it's worth about $1800-$2100. I'm not a buyer, but that's probably where I'd be on an offer if I wanted it.

I too think it should be cracked and resubmitted. The strike is excellent and a minor wipe shouldn't,IMHO keep it out of a nice holder.
