uhhh....sort of a new problem

I have read about a lot of e-bay problems here but this is one I haven't seen:

I sold a VG 1908 Barber on E-bay for $5.50 or so. The buyer (for whatever reason) left me positive feedback almost immediately after his Paypal payment.

The auction ended on the 13th or 14th of November. I shipped the coin out the next day. I just received an e-mail stating that he hasn't received it yet.

It's been quite a while and I am sure it has had time to arrive. I asked him to wait until the end of the week to make double sure that it wasn't just the USPS, and if it still hadn't arrived, we could work it out.

Soooooo..... does he have the coin and is scamming me? Does he want his $5 back??? What would YOU do?

edited to add: what if he is building a low grade collection and does this every time? Leaves positive feedback and pays immediately and then 3 weeks later says it never arrived??? Am I being too paranoid?

Considering the low cost of the coin, I'm guessing he's on the up and up.

It's not worth $5 to have a bad relationship on eBay. I'd keep the postage & send back the $5.50.

Edited- I would base my above statement on the buyer's feedback history.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • okay THIG - but what would you do now?

  • I've had this happen to me in the past.

    Wait 30 days and if he still has'nt recieved it,send his money back.May be a scam,may not.$5.50 is'nt that bad.Mine was $37.50.

I'd also block him from future auctions.

I usually give 14 - 20 days after I purchase an item before I will contact the seller. I several cases the seller(s) came back and said because of volume mine did not get sent out They sent it and I received it. On the other side of the 'coin', only had 2 buyers contact me about where their coin was (usually about 10 days after payment), I asked they wait another couple of days and if they did not receive it I would refund their payment.........as with prior posts above, not worth the hassle for low cost item....refund him if you feel sufficient time has passed (-shipping)................Rick

I'm on the side of those saying it isn't "likely" to be a scam.
If you think it is an ongoing scam, go look at some of his completed auctions, contact the sellers, and ask them if that has happened.

I require shipping on the few items I sell. I understand it is usually factored into the cost of the bid from people and I may "get less". But, if I don't require shipping (too low of a price), then I "self-insure".

To think someone is stealing (yes, some do) for that amount, and to block them, etc, is pretty sad.

    Do unto others.....

I would, personally, ask him to wait the 30 days (mail can be awful at this time of year) and that I would refund the bid amount after that time.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

It can take up to 3 weeks if your 1st class package gets in with parcel post mail.

Give it 3 weeks and then give him his $5 back

I had the same thing happen on a circ 1950 D nickel. I refunded the guys money after 30 days and forgot about it. 3 months later he called to tell me the coin just arrived and wanted to pay for it. For the small amount of money involved, I doubt if your buyer is a scammer.
