1916 D Mercury Dime

Have a 1916 D Mercury Dime in a solid NGC AG3 grade. Better than average Mint mark. Have no idea what this is worth. Should I sell it privately or put it on ebay? Took the coin to a coin dealer here and was offered $375.00. Is that a fair offer? Not my field of expertise. More of a sportscard guy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure where the best place to sell it is but general sell price recently is for $400-500.

I would do a search on Ebay for completed auctions for 1916 D NGC AG3 to get an idea of what they are selling for.

  • Thanks for the info. Will check out ebay.

  • I would suggest selling it on ebay.A lot of people will take comfort in the fact it is in NGC plastic possibly making it go higher than expected.

<< <i>Thanks for the info. Will check out ebay. >>

Based on what I've seen in recent auction sales, both here and on Teletrade, I'd say the typical certified AG-3 '16-D dime is selling anywhere from $450 to $575 (including the juice for Teletrade) with an average of around $500. Check the eye appeal of some of these coins relative to yours to see if you can notice a trend between eye appeal/quality and final sale price and get an even better approximation of its value.

If your coin is on the lower end of the eye appeal scale and you're determined to sell, I might be inclined to take the dealer's offer; otherwise if it's nicer I'd probably try my hand on eBay (assuming you have a trustworthy feedback score and percentage), especially since it's professionally authenticated by NGC. This coin has enough demand that it's not likely you'll get low-balled too badly, even if only snipers came out. If you have little or no feedback history, some bidders may not come out (or bid less with less confidence), so that's another factor to consider.
  • I just bought one in the same grade and slab for $459 last week. You could sell it for over $425 on ebay no matter what. The dealer lowballed you.

The dealer didnt low ball him Cam.

I buy those at 375$ from local dealer in PCGS AG3 holders and have sold many to board members for 425$.

I guess he's not entitled to make a profit. A $375 offer sounds like a reasonable offer to me given the need to make a profit to, you know, stay in business.

I wouldn't take that offer. But I can see how a zero-feedback eBayer, for example, might be tempted to do so. (Actually, if that dealer had stuff I wanted, I'd see if he'd up his offer a little bit for trades rather than an outright purchase.)

A dealer offering $375 for a coin he would sell for $425-$500 is *not* lowballing.
  • True. I guess I thought offers should start around $400. Lowball was the wrong word.

  • maybe not lowballed, but too low of an offer...$400 is a more reasonable price given today's bull market for key dates and coins in general

  • Glad to see there is a lot of knowledgeable people on this board. Great comments by everyone. I only thought the smart ones were on the Sportscard board. HEHEHE. LOL. Now that I think about, people who collect coins are smarter. At least you will always have the face value of the coin. What do we sportscard collectors have...a piece of cardboard.

  • Cammie....... was it a decent coin for $459 ? I think it was a fair price if it was image In reality, I think $375 was sorta low knowing that you can flip slabbed AG-3's for 450+ in a matter of hours....... I'll gladly take 10 % profit on a $400 coin I know I have buyers lined up for !

  • It was a VERY decent coin @ that price. A dealer might price it at $495 retail or so so I still think the dealer offering $375 was low.

Does this plastic increase the price?
