David Lawrence--future of its live auctions?

Does anyone have an opinion as to whether DLRC will continue to hold live auctions after the Richmond sales are complete? They seem to be getting good prices on those auctions, and they started an online auction segment, but I am wondering if there are enough coin companies out there already that hold live auctions. I am not sure how DLRC "scored" the Richmond collection, but it seems to have put them on the map in the auction world, but I don't know if they can sustain it. They have not announced any other live auctions, so I wonder if they have future plans to hold more, or if this is a one time deal. Any comments?

  • No one really knows except them. I hope they make it in the auction segment but like you said after the Richmond collection: what comes next?

My guess is they will stick with it, since the first one was a success and the second will be easier than the first now that they have put their system through the test run.
    I brake for ear bars.
  • I hope they do. They are one of the most reliable and professional online dealers around. The Richmond collection sucess should get them other significant auctions and with their excellent reputation they should be fine. image
  • I talked to them before the Richmond Sale about sending consignments, so I hope so. The last time their auctions were mentioned, they popped up here on the boards with a reply. So, maybe they'll see this thread and give us an answer. I think I'll just call them in the morning and ask them.

  • Hi All,

Actually, we do have formal plans to hold our first post-Richmond Auction on June 28-29 in conjunction with the second annual New York Invitational Show. This was our first venue last year, and most people are surprised to find out that we announced the auction well before we "scored" the Richmond consignment. I have committed to Show for a second year and we are now officially in the process of seeking consignments for this sale. If you would like to consign, please contact me directly (john@davidlawrence.com). We can take up to 1500 lots for this sale, and we'd LOVE something special.

That said, thank you very much for the support and kind words on this forum. It's been a tremendous amount of work getting through 2 sales, and we are currently preparing the third Richmond Catalog. It's really exciting with all the Seated and Barber material from the collection. The Seated coins --- half dimes, dimes, twenty-cent, quarters, halves -- include nearly every proof from 1839 -1891. Not since Pittman have we seen anything like this on the market.

Thanks again for your support. We look forward to growing in the auction field.

    Happy Holidays...

    Sincerely,

    John:

Thank you very much for your response. Please note that there have been other threads about the Richmond auctions as well, including comments on the catalogs that were put out for the sales. I am sure if you do a search of the past threads, you will find the comments. They may or may not be helpful.

    Thanks again.

The answer I got was YES
  • By the way, we are busy this week posting the Richmond, Part III Collection to the web site. All the images are now posted and we're working on the cataloging (text portion) right now. We are excited, as well, to announce one other consignment to the sale: The Cajun Registry Collection of Morgan Dollars. This is strictly a two-consignor sale.

Visit the Richmond Collection home page for more info.

    Thanks again for your support,

  • What about your weekly web auctions?

  • Thanks for asking... Weekly Internet Auctions will resume on Wednesday of this week. We'll stick with a start Wednesday-close Monday schedule for now.

John: you should hire Shylock to come do your imaging - especially on the upper tier coins.

On another thread, I have lobbied Heritage to hire Shylock (double his salary, move him to Dallas) and make him Director of Numismatic Photography.
