An ANR loser, but can you blame me for losing out on this one?

Although I'm a Morgan guy, I was willing to make an exception for this beauty, but ended up a loser.

Any opinions on the coin.

It's a beautiful coin (at least the picture is), and I would have fallen for it, as well.

I bet it was much darker that the pic...did you have anyone look in person?
  • I like that coinimage My bids were crushed on every Morgan at ANR, but ended up with a very rare document of al things.

I bid on a piece of colonial currency signed by a Declaration of Independence signer, two things I know nothing about, and I was totally blown away.

I have always thought a very cool collection would be autographs of the signers of the Declaration.

Nice coin. That must have been a hard coin to mint.
    US Navy CWO3 retired. 12/81-09/04

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.

  • RYK- I know less than you and just could't bid higher on lots 1028 or 1029. A five pound note printed by B. Franklin followed by the next lot w/ sign. a Declaration signer! Boy that was neat stuff- but I had no idea what they were worth! I got a bill of sale that's not politically correct to discuss, with the intent to donate it to the appropriate museum here in D.C.

Ah, classic commems...if I ever get around to it, I have a top 10 PCGS Registry Set (seriously, I was bored and figured it out) to put up. ;-) They are my passion! I have a Connecticut just like this one (PCGS MS 66) that I got about two years ago for $1300. at the end of a show when the dealer was hurting from a tough show.

I'm sorry that you lost, that is a gorgeous coin. Do you have any idea of the bid that beat you?

Speaking of which, I've heard that anything signed by Josiah Bartlett of NH, based on the popularity of "The West Wing" continues to head North on the profit line much more than many of the other Declaration signers.
  • Don't feel bad guys, everyone got crushed !! I was an underbidder on the 1895 proof Lot 1628 ... I really wanted that coin !!!! Everything went so strong, but I just couldn't see stretching to that level !!!!! Now I will just have to drool over the photo, without the coin in hand ...

It appears there were a lot of nice original coins in the ANR auction, although I didn't get any reports from anyone who saw them in hand. The money bid on the floor seems to confirm my hunch about the nice pieces.

I guess the good thing about losing to moon money is that we have our eye on the right coins.

My fear on that Connecticut is that I'm going to see it on a delaer's website next week for $4000 or more.

And I got beat out on this one:

Auctions are not the place to be buying coins these days.
  • The auction prices are nuts but what do you do when an ultra rare coin comes up you've been unable to find for years. I'm thinking I'll be sick if I miss it at 3X trends and sick if I buy it too!!

    Morgannut,

Re ANR auction prices, I think it depends on what lots on which you are bidding. Yes, if you want the finest known pre 1835 type coin or specific desired Morgan $, they are going crazy. But this is not across the board. The one lot that interested me went for wholesale, and it was very nice for the grade.

I passed on it, because I think the market is softening for this material, and I put the money in a mutual fund that I think is a keeper. I believe my coin will be cheaper in a few months.

Which fund? Mutual funds are my other hobby.
