These now seem to trade at around issue price now on eBay where last year people were paying big money to get them.

I guess the fad is over now

National Wildlife Refuge System commemorative medals. The were issued by the Mint with a limit of 25,000 and sold out in 1 day.

What is unique about them is they were the first to be etched using a laser instead of minted in a press.

Wasn't it just the dies that were prepared with laser technology, not the medals themselves?

The design was created via laser.

These medals, in my opinion, are the best thing that the mint has issued in the last several years that comes close to being worth what I paid for it. And, lest you think that I do not support the mint, I buy multiples of nearly everything they produce....just ask my wife.

The dies were NOT cut using a laser, nor were the medals created using a laser. The laser was only used to etch or frost the designs instead of using sandblasting.

In early manified images that I saw the frosting is actually coarser than that created using sandblasting.

Well, then they are even more un-interesting than originally thought.

if the prices are indeed way low, then what we're seeing is the end result of speculating by many, many dealers/collectors or just regular eBay sellers. it seemed odd last year that most buyers were denied availability and would be an ironic twist if they're able to obtain medals now at below cost!!! the ones who suffer in the end will be those foolish enough to pay steep premiums last year because they lost out on the Mint Lottery and thought there were actually 25,000 collectors who wanted examples of each issue.

Did a quick search and it looks like about the only things getting bids are pieces that are below issue price, I see a Duck medal with a BIN of $34 getting no interest, There are some five coin lots of ducks closing in a few hours at $30 per coin that have only one or no bids. Doesn't sound like a lot of interest to me. Considering how "hot" these were last year when everyone wa so upset because they couldn't get them and they were selling out almost as soon as they went on sale and then they weren't getting shipped resulting in a lot of complaints here on the board, it now looks like they are eventually heading for bulion value.
