I'm thinking ANACS may have gotten it wrong on this 1965 JFK. What do you guys think?

It's holdered as an SMS coin. Looking at the weakness in the shield and tail feathers, I think this one might be a business strike. What's your opinion?

At first sight, given the 'look' and the date, I'd assume it was SMS. Of course, I know squat about Kennedy halves though (Other than how to tell if they are AH or not).

I was told once that the TPG's always consider super clean coins from these yrs as always SMS coins. This was due to the poor quality of business strike issues. I'd guess that as nice as that one is you will get the SMS designation 99% of the time.

Based on the image, it does not seem to have the proof-like "look" of an SMS coin. Would be interesting to see how PCGS would holder it. What's the grade? 66?

You'd be guessing correctly. There are a lot of business strike coins stuck in SMS holders just because they look "too good."

I picked this one off on Teletrade last night. It's graded MS65, and ANACS is notorious for being brutal on these. I'll have a better idea once it gets here, but for $6 I figured I'd take the risk.

I think it is a SMS and they had too much light on the coin making it look like a normal business strike.

I'd guess that is not an SMS coin. It's not only the strike but the surfaces are atypical
for SMS, and the die wear is a little advanced for SMS.

looks like a business strike to me... but there are others here that know more about this. Based on the strike, color and overall quality of the coin, it just does not look SMS.

Bump with an update. ANACS did get it right - it's an SMS. Much more prooflike in hand. They were stingy with the grade, though, it's an easy MS66.

Maybe they unpackaged it themselves from Mint SMS packaging?
