Nice Wash. grading surprise.

Looking thru some Washington quarters I had purchased a while back, I came across this 40D Washington that was in a 2X2 just labeled UNC., $48.00. Well it looked pretty nice, so I sent it in, and I got it back in a 65 holder. Are these quys selling for anywhere near the $300 listed in the PCGS price guide?

The last one to sell on Teletrade, sold on Jun 28, 2004 for $230. Looks like you made a good score!!

  • Nice coin and nice surprise! 40-d is actually THE hardest coin in the set to locate, or at least it used to be. After a year of looking I finally got a pcgs ms64, and then as things go, found a raw one a few weeks later that I liked slightly better. The raw one I bought as ms64 but think it'd have a shot at ms65 if sent to pcgs.
  • Yeah, the other dates are rarer but cost more so are for sale more. I haven't watched silver Washingtons on ebay or major auctions in a while, but it used to be you would see a ton more of all those other dates for sale (36-d and 37-s also were very infrequent). I guess the grades matter too of course. I was strictly looking to buy ms64's.
  • That's a very nice 40D for an MS65. From the pics, I would have graded it higher. image

    First POTD 9/19/05!!

  • Speaking of 1940 D's. I just got submission results from NGC. I sent in a nicely toned 39S which graded MS66 and a 40D that went MS67! image Seeing the prices realized from Heritage, I might have to make my first crossover attempt to PCGS. image

The 40D has been known as the toughest coin in the 40's tofind but I might maintain tha t the 41D is commonly overlooked and is equally as difficult to find in GM and better grades....but it certainlt doesn't have the noterity of the 40D.

Thanks for the responses guys and thanks for the link Bikingnut. I think PCGS was a little hard on the grade on this one. I see a solid 66 with the coin in hand. PCGS has been really tough on me with grades lately.

1940-d is a ridiculously UNDERrated coin. having put together several sets over the years, this coins is a 2nd tier key, imo, after the 32-d,s & 36-d. yours looks FANTASTIC, & i'm green w/ envy!!!

    that is 1 HE11UVA coin - CONGRATS!!!

Thanks again for the responses. I think this coin may go back for a regrade after PCGS gets off their current killing streak.
