MS Washington Quarter Experts:

Tell me what a 1949 Washington Quarter in NGC MS 68* with MONSTER toning would be worth.

Finest known and alone. Assume that the toning was unimprovable.

To some, just because of the number on that label, it may be worth what I refer to as crazy money. Actually, manofcoins could probably give you a much better answer than I, especially if he can view it. If you or I sent it as is to PCGS, it probably would go 67 if we were lucky and then again, if somebody with balls like an elephant cracked it out and sent it in, it could...COULD, come back in a bodybad as AT, depending on WHO the submitter is. Of course, this is strictly my opinion . I believe that WHO submits particular coins DOES make a difference.
If I owned it and wanted it in a PCGS slab I would submit it for "crossover up to one grade less" depending on what sort of premium a PCGS 67 would bring versus what it presently does, just like it is in it's present slab, otherwise just leave it as is.
To answer your question more concisely...."Crazy money" by just the right person looking for THAT coin. I don't have to worry about it though because I would not be THAT person.

  • Basically I agree with the above. You have to realize that the prices on this series are driven by the PCGS Registry much more than other series. It's not unusal for an NGC Washington to be worth 1/5 what the same coin is in PCGS. That said, it must be a special coin for NGC to give it a 68*, and PCGS has graded one 68 only as well. It's worth more than a PCGS 67 assuming the toning is no questions NT and "normal" looking. The big money is in the PCGS holder however, or perhaps a big auction.

  • By the way Stella Colbert Collection lot #1295 "monster" toned, PCGS-67 1949 from #1 registry Washingtons brought $1,150 in Balt ANA 2003 Bowers and Merena Sale. That was a beauty with on little tick on reverse. That's a start.

I bought such a coin in a Heritage sale about a year ago for around $12k as I recall. As I recall, the coin was then tried as a straight cross and failed at PCGS. The coin was then cracked out of the holder (yes, a $12k NGC coin cracked out) and submitted to PCGS raw, where it graded PCGS-MS68. Manofcoins bought the coin from me - and it does have toning which is near "unimprovable" - perhaps he can show a scan of the coin as it is a real jewel. image

i ,as well as others here, were assured that whom ever submitted any given coin
would NOT be given any kind of preferencial treatment over another, and that there was NO
political games being played when it comes to coin submitters.

has the ball game changed from just a few short years ago?

Boom: Craig has a beautiful picture of the coin and hopefully can post it here. It is lovely. I know I may have sold it at a "weak moment", probably around the time I spent a sizeable sum of money adding a bunch of pattern nickels to that particular collection. One of the perils in collecting too much "stuff". image

"Like Mitch I cracked out a ms 68* and it came back from pcgs as a ms 67. It is a 68 just a matter of timing. Mitch and ms 68 know the coin. I will post a picture of the 1949-p that I have later tonite"

Craig: Quite frankly, if I were you, I might crack the coin once again from the PCGS holder, place it in a SAFEFLIP and keep it there until it is time to sell. Your coin is worth HUGE money if marketed even in a flip! Nicest for that particular date I have EVER seen.
