What do you hate about local shows?

I went to Nashua show Sunday. The show was BUSY, the floor was packed, which was very nice. But I spent maybe half hour browsing (aka walking around). The problem was I see the same coins in the inventory, the dealers just "recycle" the coins between each other with very little fresh material. What's your pet peeve about local shows?

That's really your number one issue? Wow, for me it wouldn't be in the top 100.

No on-site submissions beats out other characteristics of some local shows? Things like lack of fresh material, overcrowded aisles, poor and/or overpriced food availability, expensive parking, show admission fees, dealers who don't care if they sell anything so they won't come down off their very high prices, etc. etc.?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Yeah. The local shows are great here. No admissions, free parking. I always find fresh coins, and if they don't care if they sell anything thats their problem. I move on and spend my money with those that want to sell.

  • I attended the Salem, VA show this past Saturday. This show can be hit or miss. This particular show this past Saturday was a disappointment from a Morgan dollar collector persective. Besides the stale material usually offered at local shows, there is always those dealers that seem to specialize in cleaned coins and insist there is nothing wrong with them, those that over grade considerably or have their prices set to indirectly imply there coins are of a higher grade. But I keep going because I never know when that 'gotta have' coin is going to show up.image

  • MY only pet peeve is dealers clearing out on Sunday before the show is over?
Heck they usually don't open the doors before noon too, and some dealers don't come back after Saturday.
yeah I know there are many other shows, dealers get tired, blah blah, blah.
But it is a pet peeve.

It's the 2 hour (or more) drive to get to a local show that gets me.

What's to like? Dealers who talk down to you, overpriced boring inventories, crowded rooms (and the smell!), and so many durn Republicans. Local coin shows are just depressing.
  • lol!
  • I regularly attend both the Nashua and the Westford shows.
The Westford show is only 10 minutes from home so I guess I
    am lucky.

I don't like the narrow isles between the tables. I took my
one year old son in a carraige once to the Westford show and
had a hard time manuevering. Not everyone was appreciative
of my efforts, either. At one point I stopped to look at some
coins and notices the table cloth was moving. My son had
grabbed a hold and was pulling it off the table.

Both Westford and Nashua get crowded during peak hours
and it becomes difficult to get to talk to the dealers and see
their stuff. There are a few bigger dealers who bring new stuff
and it gets very crowded around those tables.

I've found myself asking to see coins just to realize they're the exact same ones I looked at last time.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

    The hour drive
    ---
    Not much inventory
    ---
A dealer who doesn't know what something is worth then asks what you would give, you shoot him a price and all of sudden he knows exactly what is is worth (@05 over your bid)
    ---
dealers that have an attitude of don't bother me unless you want a $1,000 coin
    ---
dealers who think whizzed and heavily cleaned coins demand strong money if they are sellling them but are worthless if buying them
    ---
rude patrons who plop down in front of a table to chat for an hour blocking the cases

From a dealers perspective at which I am a novice, the thing that bothers me is when many customers pull out the greysheet, but really do not know how to use it. Some ask "what is bid" as if they are letting you know how savey they are.

From a customers perspective, some of the bigger dealers that are used to long beach are a bit arrogant and tend to leave early if they are not doing well. Many times they are not at their table. Many are terrible at customer service.

    here comes the wet blanket....
sad thing is shows are for the dealers mostly.
something like 80% of all buying and selling is done
dealer to dealer and we as customers mostly get what they dont want.
