Has anyone here ever cleaned a coin & then got PCGS to slab it?

I'm talking about getting PVC or some other gunk off of it.

Tell us what the problem was with the coin & how you fixed it, then how it graded.

PVC comes off with an acetone dip... tons of dipped coins get into PCGS slabs.

Rinsing is very good, neutralizing is best. And many use distilled water in these processes. I do NOT dip coins.

I believe someone one time cleaned up a real expensive St Gaudens double eagle and later got it into PCGS plastic, you may want to ask Laura "Legend" about it.

That wasn't a cleaning. It was a putty job to get the coin into a higher grade holder. The putty turned which is what she noticed.

The key is to rinse it long enough. If you do a quick 20 second rinse it will start to spot over time. A good minute (or more) rinse is best.

Of course- they even did one for a few years ago. A proof barber dime that developed a spot over a few years time- I sent it to them and it came back without the spot. mike

you should rinse with distilled water since tap water has chemicals in it.

Massive rinsing is a must and I use distilled water to avoid water spots.
