Grade Revealed...1836 Reeded Half....PCGS MS63

This is another one of my recent purchases. Isn't the 1836 known for having a weaker strike?
Does this year tend to receive a little kick when graded due to its scarcity?

Interesting how the opinions vary on this...It is a tough coin to grade, especially this issue.

Hopefully PCGS got it right..."MS63"... My BH set consist of coins with this type of toning and its been hard to find a 36 Reeded with a similar look... I would have like for it to have just a little more detail, but I'll have to settle for now.

Thanks for all the opinions,
Randy

Reeded Edge Halves usually are struck up well, though sometimes the dies are out of alignment (hence one side of the obverse would have sort stars) and die cracks are not uncommon. There is clearly wear on the curls below LIBERTY and on the eagle's lt. wing on its head. You might attribute the wear on the curls on the obverse to strike on a Capped Bust Half if there aren't any luster breaks, but there are luster breaks here.

Depending on the amount of the luster, this coin IMO is an XF 45 to an AU 50. There's too much obvious wear to call this an AU 58.

  • Now this is a coin I would love to own. I don't see any signs of wear but there are some areas which are not fully struck. Would call it an MS62 or MS63. These are really tough to find this nice.

This is a nice coin, the TPG could have given a little slack on this one for the year.

Don't believe the reported mintage on this year, auction frequency is more than the 1802 half (R.3, 28K mintage), and a little less than the 1815 half (R.2, 47K mintage). But the 1836 RE is still a key date that always has strong demand.

The 1836 reeded edge is a tough coin in 62 or better. I have a PCGS 63 and an NGC 64. The one posted is a MS, IMO. Whether it graded 61 62 or 63 depends on the service. The weakness of strike at the wing tops, and in the left reverse are diagnostic.

    A very nice original coin

  • AU55-58? Need to see it in hand... $20 says the TPGs called it MS62/63

Super nice AU58 IMO, makes a strong case for MS60 or MS61. Too much detail and luster for a grade lower than 58, just a bit too much handling is apparent for MS62 (that and the huge price increase in MS)

    Terrific coin! image

There was a MS62 that was upgraded recently that has been making the rounds of Teletrade, etc. Heritage may have been involved in the upgrade as it first appeared in a recent HNAI FUN auction as MS62. It's had trouble finding a home as a 63 in Heritage's possession. I believe it has been offered at auction by them more than once. Gut feel says it was their upgrade. I hope this isn't the same coin. It originally sold for around $7000 in 2001 or 2002.

Not the same coin, I don't think. I believe the coin roadrunner is talking about had a slight cut on the eagle, was a bit darker and had a sharper strike.

Coins usually look better than Heritage images, so I think it probably looks great in person.

The 1836 reeded edge half is one of those coins that got killed by the advent of pop reports. The low mintage always gave the coin a certain mystique - an image that is fading as people realize that the other reeded edge bust halves are just about as tough to find in most grades.
