Extremely nice half dollar!! It looks like a MS-65 from what I can see. Absolutely gorgeous. Send it to PCGS at once. They will give you their opinion for a small fee.

p.s. Damn nice half, I'm jealous!

  • this is one of those toss up coins. looks good, very nice detail, and for the most part clean.

    I call it a very nice AU-58 ,or ms63.
    depending on the graders day.image

I would say the coin looks to be a nice Gem, MS65.

Nice coin. It looks a lot like the 1862 Seated Half in my own type set. It appears to have that nice original-looking frosty gray sheen over the luster.

Minimum, AU-58 if there's a little rub. If not, probably about MS-64, maybe even 65 depending on underlying luster. There are very few hits compared to a typical Seated half. This appears to be a very nice coin. Even if this coin is a technical 58, it's probably worth an MS-62 bid. image

A No Motto Half in 5 is worth serious money. A few suggestions:

    1) Look carefully at the coin. Is that wear on the eagle's beak, or is it the lighting?
    2) Is that wear on the eagle's rt. wingtip (to the viewer's lt.,) or is that just how the coin was struck?
    3) Is that wear on Miss Liberty's rt. knee (to the viewer's left)? Can't tell from the pic.

Is the pic the coin's actual color? I'd tend to think not; the pic looks like an indoor photo taken with a flash, with too much yellow-orange color.

The coin has a good strike and clean surfaces, but with that stuff around the head, I don't see it in a 5 holder. The No Motto Halves I've seen have lots of eye appeal. The TPGs will cut you some slack re Miss Liberty's head not being fully struck and the nearby stars being soft. A few minor tickmarks or hairlines seem to be okay as well.

I can't tell if this coin has ANY luster or not. My guess is not, and hopefully for fivecents I am wrong.

    if it's problem free it's a 62

Th luster fades a bit going from the outer devices into the open fields. Hence I think a 63 or 64 rating makes more sense. But depth of luster and marks drive the grade. The photos are not clear enough to judge those. The coin is definitely unc with no wear, just the usual high point chatter that all early halves tend to have.
Good luck, hope you get that 65.

Looks nicer in these pics. Luster still hard to see. But appears to be 63+ to 65. My gut feel is that the reverse luster may be broken a tad. the strike on this is excellent - Lib's head and the stars are essentially fully up. If one gets caught up looking at weak wing tips, just go to the eagle's knuckles and arrow head shafts/tips. Those are perfectly struck and bold. They would normally show slight wear too if the wingtips did.

Many Seated and Capped Bust Unc. coins have a weak strike on the eagle's rt wing (to the viewer's lt). Agree w Roadrunner; the overall strike is excellent on this coin. Also agree with his assessment of what makes a 5 in this series. Once you have an Unc. coin, eye appeal carries the day. They'll weigh this more heavily than strike and this coin's clean surfaces.

The luster on the reverse is not as good compared to the obverse. The obverse luster has a creamy white look to it. Thanks again for all the input.image
  • Any word on this grade?

Try to change the setting on your camera to the light your using, it should capture the coin better and either use more light or allow the aperture to stay open longer...........if you can.

    Nice coin..........63?
