On very rare occasions I pick up a few things from my safe deposit boxes from my local Bank America. I have six of the largest boxes they rent and they are packed to the brim. I wish I could keep some things around for longer than a day or two, but I don't want to take the chance of being robbed. Having a good home safe for those few things I keep for a few days would give me some additional peace of mind.

I wouldn't mind having the one that was posted ... looks secure and seems priced reasonably. I believe Lowe's has this model (Sentry Safe 8.2 Cu. Ft. ). I'd be more interested in its fire rating though, as I would like to have important papers protected as well as old photos.

Keeping valuable coins at home on a permanent basis is just too risky.

Heh, actually my reference to a forum member named Frattlaw came as an automatic. You seem to stack up just like him.

The best policy to keep your stuff safe IMO is keep your mouth shut and don't flaunt it. My own family doesn't know everything in my safe and I don't feel like I need for them to see it either. The people that brag are usually the ones that don't really have anything but the Sam Waltons driving pickups are the ones with the real bucks........................

Nobody ever gets killed during bank robberies? You just might be killed if you happen to be there! Bank parking lots are among the deadliest places in the U.S. And you call us naive?

you are twisting the topic and I am done trying to talk sensibility regarding keeping vast sums of valuables in one's home. A Public Service Announcement gone on deaf ears.image

<< <i>Nice riff. Who the hell are you to even assume you know what I am or what I think? >>

Never posted what you are but you did post what you think of folks with home safes.

<< <i>That's about the stupidest comment I have read and there is no shortage. >>

Sorry you didn't read the whole post.

<< <i>I'm not scared, I'm smart. But look, YOU keep your coins at home and hope they are safe. >>

Sorry you didn't read the whole post.

<< <i>I have a seven figure collection and NO IDIOT is going to persuade me that the safety of my home is where they belong. >>

That's great but no one said you should keep something of that value at home.

    << <i>I have a safe, but it's for valuable documents and keepsakes...not $75K coins.Do you get that part?. >>

That's really wise. Where would you keep low end coins?

<< <i>By the way, I live in Winnetka Il,. which has the lowest crime rate in the entire Chicago area. But big bucks aren't for testing even those odds. >>

Again good advise. Just not sure anyone here was talking the bucks you are.

<< <i>This thread has been argued so many times and I just can't believe how naive so many people are. >>

Yes in your three months here you have seen this argued. Yes 75K belongs in the bank and all the idiots here know that.image

    << <i>Tough guys, right? You don't need life insurance either...it's so stupid...you aren't going to die.image >>

Please understand that to some here life insurance and seven figure collections mean nothing. There is no need for insurance. The 75K coins are in the bank and the toys are are at home.

<< <i>Next time you want to chat, try a little civility...your tone rubs me wrong.image >>

Sorry. My fault. Just didn't catch how new you were were. Calling folks stupid and idiots just rubbed me wrong.

Home safes are great for some items.

  • Any safe is better than no safe but I advise that educating one's self about the composition of different safes is not something to be taken lightly. I just drilled a safe last night for a group of individuals that misplaced the combo and the key that locks the dial. I had never seen, let alone opened this particular brand and model. It took about thirty minutes to nail the four wheel pack, the cyl. that locked the handle, and the interior drawer lock. With the new found information, I'd have it done in 5-10 minutes. This particular box resides in a room that has little to no chance of ever being burglarized but I still would think that due to the contents, it should have been a better safe. I would venture to guess that the manufacturer they bought it directly from overhyped the unit. Choose a unit that fits with the contents.

Nope you are 100% correct. If I had a seven figure collection, it too would be in a bank vault. But then again if I had a $1,000,000.00 collection I'd probably have enough money to buy the bank out and keep a 24hour armed guard posted just to protect my collection. So in that respect we do agree.

With a $1,000,000.00 collection, perhaps you should be walking around with bodyguards also. You probably have an income/other assets that make you a target for a kidnapping for ransom. Forget getting killed, I would want you alive not dead if I was a bad guy. I have known people that are worth 25 million + and they do have armed guards for protection. If you are that high profile, I suspect that life for you is much different than mine. So you have my apologies in that sense. But I wouldn't really say my collection is worth "vast sums" as yours is. So for my measely collection I like to have them were I can enjoy them.

Where did I say I was an attorney???? I was a Investigator for the Public Defender's office, not an attorney. And I was talking about street crime, not legal proceedings.

You just can't let it go can you? You want to discredit my statements? You really should let it go. But of course you can't. Even with an alt ID
you prove who you are. Would you like me to really prove it? Just keep trying to make it look like I don't know what I'm talking about.

Again, I mentioned a name by habit and mistake. You keep pushing it.

  • Many professional burglars and 'retired' safe crackers find great job security by purporting themselves as day laborers for shipping contractors who deliver heavy safes and install them behind your trap doors. Make sure not to insult them with a $50 tip after they install your ‘safe’. image
