Knowledge is the enemy of fear
#2- He buys bodybagged coins cheap from people that are angry and disappointed that they got "taken" by a certain dealer(s) and he's out to prove his and their cases by letting everyone know about it. Notice his willingness to answer any and all questions. He IS afterall, still selling PCGS "certified" coins.
Either way, new wrinkle....I like it and obviously others do as well. Smooooooooooooth
Or could it be he's making some other statement? I think I'll ask him.
<< <i>Take a good look at the 1841 Seated Liberty. There is a major clue there. We'll see what he says. >>
Bump for the morning crew. I looked at the auction for the 1841, and have no idea what Boom was alluding to. My curiousity is definitely piqued, though.

"Keep in mind that most of what passes as numismatic information is no more than tested opinion at best, and marketing blather at worst. However, I try to choose my words carefully, since I know that you guys are always watching." - Joe O'Connor
Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
I COULD print his reply but that's basically it. I can understand his ire with whoever sold him the coins, but being angry with PCGS I DO NOT agree with. Also he should look in the mirror to see who else he should be mad at for not being experienced enough to discern that these coins are indeed cleaned.
He made a statement conerning PCGS which is his perogative but it's MY perogative not to print it. The truth hurts. He was taken but NOT by PCGS. End of mystery.

If he can't find a mirror, he can just look into one of his polished coins.
True the coin might not even be the same one, but I would think that is unlikely. He would have to get the BB label from somewhere.

Lincoln Wheats (1909 - 1958) Basic Set - Always Interested in Upgrading!
Here we have 8 coins and 8 BB inserts. They are all marked CLEANED. Nothing else..................
Since PCGS went no further with their grading investigation (by admission from David Hall himself in a Q&A thread) these coins could also be counterfeit. A PCGS tag with CLEANED on it can be used as an authentication tool by the seller.
"Hey look, PCGS certified the coin, ........... it's just been cleaned."
Why can't PCGS do the complete job on the BB'ed coins and authenticate them. The submitter has paid for it haven't they ?
The tag should have ALL info on it, not just the short cutted "CLEANED" because PCGS was too lazy to complete the job for their $30 !!!

I purchased these coins all along the East coast during my travels. Keep your eye on auctions I am going to be adding some additional items this afternoon. Such as (2) 1986-W Walking Liberty $50 gold proof, straight from the mint, early quarter dollars(uncertified) and possibly a semi-complete set of mercury dimes, set is just missing 1942 over 41 and it includes a 1945 micros (uncertified) and a complete set of Peace Dollars (uncertified)
Take Care,
Dave

So, you see, YES, the dealers may have all taken a "Live One" for a ride, which IS a shame but this has nothing to do with PCGS and so I followed up by asking...
" So YOU picked these out personally being sold raw from various dealers, as Uncirculated? Weren't you able to at least suspect they were too shiny....too "clean"?

To which he replied..
A couple I did personally and as I know now my grandfather did as well. It's just the chance one takes when dealing with uncertified coins; from a dealer not native to your area.
********************************************************************************************************
So I asked him, why then are you blaming the dealers and PCGS when the real fault lies with you? Finishing off this dialogue with the following
*******************************************************************************************************
So true. I couldn't agree with you more. So many people have been fooled that the ONLY way to be anywhere close to sure that we get what we pay for is by buying certified coins. I feel badly for you yet am glad to see your auctions are doing so well, even with the coins having been cleaned, but I think you'll have to agree that PCGS has done no wrong here and the ones to blame, when you get right down to it are the dealers, your Grandfather and YOU!
Again, the only way to be relatively sure you are not being cheated is to buy certified coins from reputable third party grading services, such as PCGS, NGC or ANACS. You should have NO beef with PCGS by what you yourself are telling me.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR AUCTIONS!

And so, that's that. As Paul Harvey says, Now....you have the REST of the story! These coins were purchased by his Grandfather and admittedly, some were bought by him. He seems to hold everyone accountable, placing the blame everywhere BUT where it truly belongs...with HIM, his deceased Grandfather and to some degree, the dealers that overgraded them and sold polished, cleaned coins.. He had some derogatory things to say about PCGS which only verifies that he is in a severe state of denial.
Time and time we see this lesson. Still, dorkkarl isn't convinced, which is disturbing.
Recently a fellow forum member bought two raw Gems from me and came back for two more, but as a "thank you" I GAVE him four more.
I concur wholeheartedly that buying "Raw" is perilous and I certainly would not encourage or endorse the buying of expensive Raw coins unless you really know what you are doing or you could get very badly burned!

If the coins are actually counterfeit, that would be just slimy to pass them off as simply "cleaned".
Thanks to this board I learned something else new today. I figured the bodybag PCGS label would say counterfeit. I wasn't going to bid on any of those coins anyway but it certainly makes me want to steer clear of raw coins.
Thanks all.
