Trade Dollar Experts: This one is either a definite Winner or a total POS.

I just picked this one up earlier in the week (it hasn't arrived yet). It's either a highly polished, faked, POS, or it might be something kind of cool and unusual. Based on the poor photos, what are the odds it's a winner? It's fun, at times, to take chances on eBay, and this one certainly qualifies as taking a chance!

After thought: I also picked up this one from the same Seller, at the same time:

(Remember these are always weakly struck and what appears often as wear is not.)

Again, I could be wrong, but I think this one's an AU+

Doesn't look too bad from the pics. Will expect new pics when you get it. Hopefully it works out.

The guy seems like he is an OK seller and all of his pics seem to have that blue tint to them---------so I think there is a 10% chance the coin will be OKimage--------------------BigE

The TD looks cleaned and the FC looks like a bad copy. PCGS grades the FC so it would be interesting to send it in.

I told my mom I wanted a Feuchtwanger cent.

    She slapped me.

Very likely polished. Likely cleaned. But... it's worth a shot (AU is twice the asking price, if it really is an AU...).

The FC is real as they all have that counterfeit look about them.

I wasn't aware though that PCGS authenticated and holdered these. Good info! Thanks Dog.

Maybe polished, maybe not. I have a beautiful PL Trade Dollar that found many years ago in a ANACS 58 holder. It crossed to a PCGS 61 holder (although PCGS does not give PL designations ;-(), this only time I've ever gotten a bump in a cross. I would say that the chances are slim but not impossible. So I give it a 5% shot. The 5% is due to the fact that some 77-S's were made with PL attributes.

  • I just wholesaled a 77 S TD in AU 55 for $230, but this one looks like the devices are whizzed. The FC looks fine to my eye.

  • It looks to me like the trade dollar has been lightly polished. The Feuchtwanger looks to me to be undergraded. Like you say those do come weakly struck, causeing a lack of high point detail. I think that one is a high XF, possibly even an AU. Good deal.
