It's a bit misleading that the auction states "graded by NGC" when they aren't graded. And "beautifully displayed in our own exclusive multiholder"? Looks like the same holder I've seen elsewhere.
But in the big picture, there's no hype - in fact, it never even explains what "waffled coins" are!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
<< <i>It is my understanding these were struck by canceled dies??? >>
From what I remember.....These were struck quarters that may have had a little something wrong with them. The mint ran them through a 'waffle machine', to cancel them. Many bins of these were then sent to an 'out-of-house' smelter who saw some value to them. They paid the mint for the scrap and started to market the coins........There was some original legality issue but the final ruling was that the smelter owned the coins and could do as he pleased..... I was wondering about these "waffles". About a year ago a couple sold on Ebay and went for good money. There was an article in coin world or something too. It's interesting thread to see that they are holdered, and I think they are just a neat thing to have as a conversation peice but nothing more to me. Tom

NGC's job is slabbing coins. If a company send in slabbable coins they will do it otherwise they go out of business. Their job is grading and not saying what companies they will accept submissions from or not.

I understand that,BUT,the first time I saw a "multiholder" was on coinvault. Will they do that for your average person? I also saw where they certified smoe GSA Morgans still in the GSA holder by just sealing the holder up and sticking a grade on it for coinvault. Will they do that for anyone? Can anyone send in waffled coins and get them encapsulated in a multiholder?Maybe,I don't know. I guess watching coinvault has turned me agin'em. IMO PCGS and ANACS are the only respectable TPGs in the business.

Yes, anyone can get the multi-holders or the GSA Morgans. Just send them in under that service level.
These should have been BB since they're damaged Waffle cancel is the destroying of the coin, can I waffle a coin and send it in. Of course not NGC does have a double standard.
But the coins are not graded. They are simply put in a holder, I have some tokens that were slabbed. I bet you if someone approached PCGS with 10,000 waffle coins and offered them $8 each to slab them they would...
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

They do look cool, though.

At the price the auction will eventually close, no interest at all.

Do any of you have anything to say aboot coinvault that may change my perception of them?

They're a big customer. They submit a lot.
How do you feel about the slabbing of the WTC silver eagles by PCGS?
