    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

I regret not trying to scrape up the dough for a low grade PCGS one I saw quite some time ago. High or low grade, those are fantastic pieces!

Awesome! Looking at it, you'd think they would have named this the "pointed breast" variety.imageimage

    Sweet coin! I love Gobrechts!

The fact that there are only two 'second originals' holdered by PCGS is a bit misleading as PCGS just created the separate coin number for that variety last month. There are many, many 'first originals' and 'second originals' that are mixed in with the previously holdered J-60 restrikes.

I was lucky enough to acquire my second original at auction recently. It's one of the nicest Gobrechts I've seen of any date or variety.

  • Bruce..... I was unaware of the "medal turn" column being recently created....... Thanks for the info........ This coin is a Die alignment II..... So much has been written, and so much conjectured about the Gobrecht "originals" that the more you read, the less you understand......... If I understand correctly, the die alignment II coins were struck as intended, with the die alignment III and IV coins being a result of die rotation as the coins were being struck....... One of the things I find most interesting is that although the coins were struck for circulation, they were all struck as proofs.......

The first issue [First Original] of late 1836 was struck in Die Alignment I - coin turn, eagle flying onward and upward. The second issue [Second Original] of early 1837 was struck in Die Alignment II and IV and everything in between due to a loose reverse die.

Restrikes were struck in the 1850's - 1870's. They tend to be Die Alignment III with a rust patch in front of Liberty's face and moderately cracked reverse lettering. But some are other orientations and in that case the test is the reverse lettering - there can be no trace of die cracking at the tops of the letters for a coin to be considered an original.

Personally, I'm not so sure about the issue of 1837 starting out as Die Alignment II and migrating to Die Alignment IV. If the mint didn't want Die Alignment IV, then why are the 1839 Originals in that orientation? And it's reported in print in the 1800's that the original 1838's were that same orientation. Makes me think that perhaps the second originals started out as Die Alignment IV and moved toward II.
