A little grading help.....

TommyTypeTommyType Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭✭✭
Bought this on Teletrade before the "picture for every coin" days. I always thought it was overgraded. Anyone care to give an opinion? I'll post the ANACS grade fairly quickly....probably by midnight PDT.

BTW....Anyone worried about the green spot on the reverse? Barely noticed it before the picture!

As for Grade...XF45-AU50....these can be tough because they don't always have even strikes and the flat spots can be mistaken for wear. Heck it could even be an Unc for that matter, but it looks AU to me.

First, thanks Shane for the help with the link. I must be seeing backwards tonight. image

    No sense drawing this out:

ANACS graded it XF-45. I guess I've been a little hard on them! Thanks for the opinions guys.

technically, xf-45 sounds just a tad strong, BUT that's a really nice original coin. i would've guessed vf-35+.

congrats on getting a great coin!

  • I'd have said 45. For a 40 (as someone else opined) I'd have expected a slightly larger flat spot on the eagle's breast.

Huh... I was gonna guess XF Details net VF30 cleaned. Maybe I'm just overly cautious, but when I see old copper with dark colors hugging just the deepest recesses of the design, my first intinct is always that the coin is cleaned. The reverse especially looks like the high points have been wiped or rubbed.

I didn't know this thread was still alive! Don't read the boards often enough I guess. image

With the coin in hand, it really isn't a dark color around the devices, but rather "dirt". But no hairlines or obvious signs of cleaning. My assumption is that this is the way the coin was when it was pulled from circulation...left over remnants for it's life as a working coin.

In this case, I would say that the remaining dirt may be evidence that it was NOT cleaned since a dedicated coin cleaner would have taken the time to scrub out the dirt!

I think I appreciate the coin a little better now after hearing everyone's comments and grades. Thanks guys.

I will go with a strong VF-35. Just a tad too much wear for me to go XF.

    I'd say it's either a very strong VF-35 or a weak XF-40.
