"Steve (Deeds) has evaluated the value and grade of billions of rare coins."

This is a direct quote from the Bowers and Merena ad in the November Numismatist.

I'm not a full-time, professional mathemetician, but wouldn't it take a couple of hundred years to evaluate and grade just 1 billion coins? Either Steve looks great for a man his age, or this ad might contain juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust a wee bit of hyperbole.

Comments

  • He's looked at thousands of bags of circ 90% and declares them 'average circ' and worth 4.2x face. That would make the claim legit - almost.

  • well,
I have handled a good bit of currency in my 35 years too. Pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves and even paper currency! I too had to determine the denomination and judge its value - before I spent it (usually face image )
    - perhaps they ought to add "in bulk" to that ridiculous claim, and take out the "grade"...and the "rare"...

Probably just a typo and a little hyperbole.
    Tempus fugit.

  • Yeah, it must be a typo. It's similar to the tag line that we use in some of our company literature. Here's an example:

Dennis (Tarrant) has handled literally hundreds of dollars of rare coins.

    or.......

The numismatists at Jade Rare Coin have a combined experience of over 3 years. That's 21 years in dog years.

Wow, you guys are going to roast Steve Deeds? Steve's one of the good guys in the business.

Further, imagine the difficulty he must be having in running a company with a name that has nothing to do with the company.

Maybe it was supposed to be "Steve (Deeds) has evaluated the value and grade of binions rare coins." --------------------------------BigE

  • Perhaps they meant billions of dollars worth of rare coins. A statement which in my humble opinion would be just as much of an overstatment as the first.

While everyone should feel free to comment about whatever is on his (or her) mind, I'd like to remind folks of the Golden Rule: do onto others as you would have others do onto me.

In this case, we're talking about real people. I think it would be reasonable to remember that bit of fact, and to temper our comments so that any of our negative comments are done so with a specific genuinely positive intent.

In other words, blasting a scumbag eBayer is ok to me because it serves a genuine public good. But, I personally derive no benefit from being reminded that marketing statements oftentimes contain hyperbole.

Please also realize that I am not trying to judge anyone here. I cannot truly get inside each poster's head; only the poster knows his true intent.

  • EVP, I don't think that anyone is saying anything disparaging about Steve Deeds. He's one of the good guys, and I think that most people here know that. I think this thread is just about a typographical error that's a bit amusing.

Mr Deeds has been around forever. If you count all of the bags of silver and other bulk deals he was a part of at A-MARK, it's easily billions......

Threads like this have a way of getting out of hand. Didn't think it was inappropriate to remind folks of something that is easily forgotten in an Internet message board setting.

    a typographical error that's a bit amusing

Yup! Can't argue with that one!

For the avoidance of any confusion, I know Steve Deeds and think he is a great guy.

I posted this because the ad caught my eye - as do many in Coinworld, the Numismatist et al - as being totally
over-the-top. I too assumed it was a typo and that the intent was to say that Steve had evaluated 'billions of dollars' worth of coins. But you know what? That too is probably impossible. Maybe the ad was supposed to say 'millions', not billions?

At the end of the day, I really don't know what they meant to say, or if the intended claim could be substantiated.

  • I don't see anything wrong with the advertisement. Steve has been around forever. I figure he has to be at least a few hundred years old by now!!image

Physical age - he's not over 90 mentally! image
  • Lets say he spent one second grading each coin, and lets say that he graded a billion of coins. Now, if you multiply 1,000,000,000 times sixty, to get the number of seconds, the sum would be 60,000,000,000 seconds. If you divide 60,000,000,000 by sixty, to get the number of minutes, the number of minutes would be 1,000,000,000. If you were to divide that by another sixty, to get the number of hours, it would be 16,666,666 hours. Divide that by twenty-four to get the number of days, which would be 694,441 days. Divide that by three hundered and sixty-five to get the number of years and you would get 1,902 years. In other words, it's physically impossible.
