If I want to sell some $40+ coins(10 of them) right now, should I just sell them at a show and see w

Im not allowed to sell coins over the net or by mail, cause my parents don't trust the mail, and who I would be sending them to. They are ten fairly common Morgan dollars, ranging from MS-61 to MS-65, with a DMPL and a 84-CC in there. They are graded by NGC, Anacs, ICG, and Tru Grade. Do these sell at shows? Could I maybe get atleast what I payed for them back? Some opinions please.

  • The NGC, ANACS, and probally ICG Morgans will get back at least a decent amount...... good luck on the TruGrade... you're gonna need it... but you're definately not gonna get as much selling to a dealer, as you are selling it yourself to another collector...

Expect to receive 15% to 20% less than you paid if your selling at a show. You might beat those percentages if you were able to rip them when buying. The BST is the best place to start IMO.

    BST Forum or ebay.
If you sell to a dealer, he will offer you the 'bid' price for the coin, while selling it for the ask. Your gonna lose at least 20%, probably closer to 50%. By selling them yourself to another collector you get to keep the spread. image

I think your parents should be more worried about that AIM addy you have.

The mail is harmless, most of the time. image

Generally, you will get offers of 10% back of bid for the NGC Morgans and possibly the ANACS coins if they are nice. Less for the other holdered coins, and also less if they are common dates.

ms/63 85-o Morgans aren't really anything a dealer wants, so you'll get very low offers on something like that.

List the coins and the grades, and we could be more specific.

  • I just talked to my father and he said he'll think about it, but is not up to it tonight, too tired. He said maybe tommorrow after school or on the weekend we could look into it.

Good luck, you have a much better shot at recovering your cost on the BST; remind your father of this point it may help.

    Scott,

Show your dad this thread (he will understand the potential (greater) losses if you sell to a dealer.
Show him the BST board as well.
Tell him you would sample a piece or two for that.

Most likely, he will let you give it a go

  • Depends how much you paid for each one but you would be able to sell them at a show.

  • Scott,

Pretty common Morgs ya got there !

I would check the PCGS price guides and figure on getting about 20-30 % of that, maybe 50%,discount of 50-70-80 %

A dealer is gonna offer about 12-18 bucks for that 98 P in an 64 NGC holder which is total BS,but a fact of life.

BST or FLEABAY might be better !

  • Here are the dealer published buy prices from R. Howard Rare Coin Gallery (419 352 9199 ) in the back of Oct 11 Coin World.......80s 43.50----83p 43.50------84cc 148.50-----84o 43.20-------85p 31.50-------86p 20.75--------------98p 43.20----01o 21.50---------04o 31.50.. These should be the minimum prices that you'll sell the coins for here or at a show unless there are obvious problems.. I've sold common date stuff to this firm for a number a years and have always been paid in full quickly with zero problems. Always send materal registered at the post office insured for full retail value. The P.O. never loses anything but you can always hope you get lucky!

Dealer buy prices are always a tad lower (imho) from what a collector would pay.
I would pay a few $$ more for a couple of those.

As for shipping registered, yes, if you are paranoid. Else, since you are just getting started, ship insured (full value) and make sure to get a signature. Also, start by selling to people you think you can trust.
