Well, well well.... it's been a full 2 years and I finally hit 1000 posts. Hmmm... wonder what that means. Let's see, some of the newbies around here that have been posting 3 or 4 months have over 2000 posts already. Is it because I lurk too much? Is it because I am not as verbose? Is it because I have to work every day? I really have no idea why it took so long to hit 1000.

Anyway - more to the point.

Here's the deal - in celebration of my 1000th post - I am giving away a NICE coin. I haven't really decided what it will be but it'll be a NICE coin.

To become eligible for the giveaway, all you have to do is explain, in 100 words or less, your opinion of the value (past, present or future) of the Barber series. Do you forsee a meteoric rise in values? Are Barbers being hoarded by some folks out west? Are they ugly and over-valued? What is your opinion? Do you like them? Why? Do you hate them? Why?

Posters that just post for the sake of posting WILL NOT be entered into the drawing. You MUST provide an intelligent viewpoint on the subject matter, i.e., future, past, present Value of Barber Dimes, Quarters, and halves and WHY you think the way you do about this series of coins.

I will put ALL the qualifying respondents names in a hat and draw the winner on Sunday Evening around 9pm CST.

Now... let's see... what coin would be a good one to give away?imageimage Any ideas? WAIT! Maybe a nice Barber?

Let's see what you'all have to say on this series of coins.

The Barber series has always been a favorite of mine. I believe that the barber series is a series often under-rated in the coin industry. The whole barber series are a set that can be collected by the average collector and yet they can be collected in the higher grades by the "big-money" collectors. As for the value, I think the increse in the morgan values will eventually roll over to the barber's causing drastic price increses toward the end of the decade.

I think thats 85 words.... hope thats good.

    My 2 cents.

    Thanks for the chance.

I believe that due to the relatively high reliefs and the scarcity of Mint state coinage in the series that seem to be horded by many specialist collectors, the high grade coinage in the series will continue to rise in value. I also believe that the low grade Barber samples (especially the Halves) are overvalued at this point and will see a decrease in price over the next ten years as people lose interest. I have great respect to anyone with the discipline to compile a mint state registry set of any of the coins in the Barber series.

Congratulations on your 1000th post and thank you for the contributions that you have made and continue to make to these boards image

Congrats on enjoying your 1000th post image

For the barber series, I really don't like them.
They took up more than 1 denomination. I find them boring (but then, I also don't really get off on nickels/dimes/quarters/and barely on halves).
I like Dollars and Cents. For the barbers, I don't see anything exciting about them. I don't see the story like Morgans. I don't see the size, to enjoy them. I don't see a cool design like with a walking liberty. For me, boring.

Not sure if that is 100 words or less...and probably not a popular opinion of the series, but then, obviously there are others that feel like me or else they would be hugely popular. image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I also don't care for the barber series- Liberty looks like a man in drag to me..... But I think the different series will continue to gain in value. There are a large number of collectors who view them as classics, and there are many key and semi-key dates that give collectors a suitable challange.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

    Congratulations on your 100th post

Personally, I find all Mr. Barber's "work" quite attractive. Not only aesthetically pleasing, his coins were well conceived as proven by the way they held up throughout a part of America's History in which coin usage was the order of the day.

From Liberty, "V- Nickels" to Barber Dimes, Quarters and Half Dollars, this one man single handedly had and will continue to have an ever increasing impact on a continually growing collector base. In my opinion, his coins covered such a wide spectrum that they are almost certain to enjoy ever increasing popularity in any and perhaps all denominations.

For the longest time I thought Mr Barber had done a self portrait. image I mean, that is one seriously ugly girl, and is probably the biggest reason this series will never gain the popularity of the Morgans or Walkers. Everything else is there for the series to do well (it trades by date and mintmark, and there are keys), but I believe it will always be coveted by a much smaller group and thus never command the premiums it may deserve. JMHO.image
  • I like the complete series in high grade MS and PR coins. The value will always be there as long as there are type sets!

I have a feeling that the Barber series is hoarded by many. I know my Grandma, born around 1900, was a hoarder. She didn't put money in the bank, she would put it in this hiding spot or that around the house. When we cleaned out her house, we found money in the strangest places. I'm sure we missed a lot too. I've been told by others that they found the same thing with their relatives from the same period. Part of Grandma's collection was the start of mine.

image Congrat's on 1,000!!!!!!!!! My thoughts on Barber Halves:

They are truly a beautiful coin is high MS and Proof state. I feel the Barber is one of the classic United States silver type coin issues and arguably the rarest 20th Century silver type coin. I think these coins are undervalued at this time. Some folks are "Hoarding" their Barbers because they realize they can do nothing but go up in value. They're the "Smart Ones". Not my coin, maybe some day, but how can someone say this is not a beautiful example of a "Classic"!!!!!! Again Congratulations on your 1,000th Post. Lee

  • I think that the prices of barber coinage in the near future will sky rocket. The cause of this soar in prices will be do to the general publics relizition of the scarce amount of barbers that are in MS grades.

  • Don't need to be entered into the contest, just wanted to say Congrats!!!! image

I actually do like the Barber series as far as the Dimes are concerned, but I have never owned a high grade Barber coin. As for future prices......I think the better dates will continue to appreciate at a noticable rate, but must of the common stuff will just never really see the sunrise as far as value goes. They are tough to find in grades above EF......problem free examples to be specific. Lot's of the higher grades have been cleaned even more so then Mercs and seated dimes in my experience. I sure hope these coins are being horded, because I would like to think their are a loy more nice examples out their that I haven't seen yet. I don't think that is the case though....I think the Barber series as a whole was more of a work horse via circulation due to the series not being asthetically as popular as some and because of the series running across multiple denominations and being minted in multiple locations.

Just my opinion of course image
  • Piker! imageCongratulations on 1,000 posts! I, myself, am not very much interested in the Barber series, yet I think we can all agree that they look great in DCAM.

I definitely hope there isn't a "meteoric" rise in Barbers. I, for one, think Barbers are an ugly coin in circulated state. On the other hand I absolutely love my mint state and proof Barbers. All of which are dimes so far. As a mint state coin it's one of the best, beautiful, but costly. I've been wanting quarters and halves, and recently almost jumped at the opportunity on a 1896 half DCAM proof in MS64, but found out it had some spotting that I just couldn't get over. In the pricing arena I believe there's some pricing discrepancies between one point values. Which, to some is wonderful when you can cherry pick a coin, resubmit, and make a hefty profit. I don't think that's wrong but it makes people hold onto those lower mint state coins and darn it, I want some.image
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

I love the Barber series, and I just started to collect the halves. My veiwpoint as far as the halves go: they will most certainly be going up, up, up in value. Let me speak for what I'm collecting - mid grade halves, but this goes for all Barber coinage as well. IMO they are hard to find nice, and at the moment reasonably priced. Most of the Barbers that I see for sale are either very worn (I like them too), or mint state. My goal is to finish a VF/XF set of Barber halves mainly because I love the look of them in that grade, uncleaned, dirty old silver, it has nothing to do with their value going up. I simply like the Barber series. When I'm done with the halves, I'll hit the quarters, unless I find a quarter that has the most unbelievable toning I've ever seen (right My3cents?)

It's a funny thing that got me started on these, I bought one halve for my Dansco type set from Coinlieutenant, now I'm collecting more halves than I am coins for the type setimage I LOVE em, I guess it's okay as long as we're collecting what makes us happy...

I love the Barber series but also hate them. Their design, and overall look are amazing. I have seen some with more color than a rainbow, and more sex appeal than my3cents (sucking up here). Why do I hate them you ask? Simple, the price. A dime from 1916 in ms64, should not cost more than a dollar from 1878 in MS65. For sheer principal, until their price drops (which doesnt look like it will happen any time soon), I will not purchase a coin from the series. My only hope at owning one of these beauties lies in the decision of a certain person giving one away...image

    Congrats on 1k!

Since I began collecting as a 10 year old kid, I have always enjoyed collecting circulated Barber Halves, which you could occasionally find in circulation along with Walking Liberty Halves before they stopped minting silver coins in 1965, and they all were taken out of circulation for their recognized more valuable 90% silver content.

I've been collecting Type Coins, Silver Dollars, and $20 Gold Pieces for almost 40 years now, and jusr recently purchased only my first (nearly) uncirculated Barber Half which is pictured below. I always felt that they were a very unique and beautiful coin design, but I could never find a mint state coin that I felt had high eye appeal, and was reasonably priced -- until I found this one...

  • Congrats on your posts. No thanks on the giveaway. Barber to me is a second rate engraver with zero rate morals.

    Have a Great Day!

  • OK I am in!
  • Ah yes, the barber series. It makes me ask certain questions....Is that a woman on the coin or is it a man? Are there any mint state barbers left? Why did I sell off all my AG-3 Barber quarters? The answers to these questions can be summed up in one phrase: IT'S A MAN, BABY!

The Barber series in high grades are in my opinion a very good bargain as far as rarity/price factor. They just might be a good place to put some money.Lloyd
Great coins are not cheap, and cheap coins are not great!
  • The Barber series, altho not really popular with some folks, encompasses some interesting dates - including the turn of the century - an interesting time period. The coins are relatively affordable in some grades making it an easy series to collect since not a whole lot of folks are interested in them. It is possible that someday this series may become more popular and those who own nice sets will be compensated for their efforts - and yes, rise in value.

    OH, Barbers....This is easy....
In my 25 years as a shop owner, I can easily count the number of AU or better Barbers that have come across the counter on my fingers and toes.....That means a maxium of 20 pieces !! These coins are scarce, and in no way is this accurately portrayed by their price. The future of this series is extremely bright !!
Way to go on your 1000 posts !!
    Paul

PS- Stuart, you were robbed on that '58' grade for your '01.....
