I need some large cent help

I bought a dateless large cent because it has a large cud on it's reverse and I thought that I would have some fun trying to identify the coin by the cud. I don't have any books on the subject, but looked around on the internet to try and ID it to no avail. I would appreciate any help that a forum member could give me regarding the coins identification.

Sheldon 263 has a die crack in approximately the same region, which could theoretically have become a large cud in late die state. If so, it's an 1803, although it's hard to determine from the picture and in it's condition. The D in UNITED seems to be further from the edge of the cud than in Sheldon's plate, however, which is a strike against it. I can't see the fraction well enough to see if it would help either. Since I assume you have the coin in hand, here's Sheldon's description to check it against:

Obverse: The crack or cut noted is now joined near the point of the bust by a crack which starts at the rim opposite the mouth, and the two form what resembles a large V.
Reverse: Small fraction. Six berries on left branch, and with small fraction this is the diagnostic. PSL center; PHL under the left side. Always seen with light crack from rim through last 0, through fraction bar and left ribbon to near middle of left stem.

I'm not certain of the attribution, but it's the best I can do. Maybe one of our Early Copper experts will chime in.

I think it is a Sheldon 265 Die state VIII. This die state obliterates "states" on the reverse and the large fraction is closer to the the wreath.

    Date 1803

  • It is S-257, an R.2 variety by type, but this particular die state would be rare.

Edited to say: Date is 1803.

  • Dennis is right, it's an 1803 S-257. S-263 and 264 have a very similar crack/cud but on the S-263, 264 die the crack starts much closer to the D of United and ends going through the left edge of the O in OF. On this one (S-257) it starts at the left edge of the S and ends going up through the F of OF. This is at least Die State V with the retained cud. Breen says that the full cud version may exist. Unfortunately the grade is probably low enough on this coin that it isn't possible to tell if this is retained and th details are worn off, or if it is the full cud.

True. That's my thinking as well. Sometimes wear makes die breaks look like a full cud.

  • If it is a rare type is it worth more than normal types even in such low grade?

Conder and Dennis are indeed correct. I missed it. It look like there is a space between the C and E in cent from the picture, a space that I do not believe the S257 has, however this is most likely my picture.

    Thanks Guys!
